i'm evaluating my birds now, but they're still separated by sex. as i decide who goes to the 'a' team, how long or does it matter regarding reintroducing the two sexes back together in the same box? my birds are all 09's which i worked with last year as babies. now some are almost 10 months old, and unless they're separated, there'll be plenty of hanky panky.

If the birds are in GOOD fly condition they really wont be too interested in breeding. Its when they get fat during the winter lockdowns that they get interested in breeding. Between the birds being fly fit and wire floors you should be able to keep the breeding in the kit box to a minimum. Joe

I fly my kits with mixed sexes. I have never had a problem flying them together. I did find when I did fly the seperate....back in the day..just to try...I noticed that the cocks flew faster and did some wing clapping...I guess they were showing off.

Like Joe said..if they are in shape they wont lay in the kit box...sinc 03 I have only had 5 eggs in the kit boxes total....as I remember....and that was during the winter months and they were on lock down for an extended period due to fog for like two weeks straight.....This year I have had none...I have noticed some hanky panky....but no eggs...but I do fly quite often so they are in good maintanance shape.

Fly the piss out of your cocks to knock some weight off of them and get them lean. Keep their feed down and then once you have their full attention this will help when you put them with the hens. Like the guys said, some hanky panky will happen but if the birds are in flying condition and not overfed they will be more concerned with eating and flying then screwing around! Enjoy your next fly! It is to the advantage of the manager of said kit to fly the hens and cocks together but house them seperately! Experience being your teacher will glean the results.Housing to develop chemistry within a kit of birds is highly over rated. If you have a family of birds that are kit oriented than you have the problem nipped in the bud without you even realizing it. What I mean by this the experienced flyer recognizes that irregardless as to what bird you replace within a kit that has been established he or she will react the same and be a team player even if not flown with said kit or housed with said kit. If you want to spice up the kit throw the hens into the pen the cocks are in for 5 minutes or so before you release the kit and experience the results. This is elementary to those veterans who have flown comp kits and know how to get the best from them. Developing a top class A kit of birds makes ones neck very sore over time LOL!

I have flown kits that I housed the cocks and hens seperately and I have flow them housed together and honestly I have had the best results housing them together. Just my personal experience though. Joe

my flying team are within one shed but in seperate kit boxes. After a few days of going on this system they will mostly go to their right box automaticaly, but the odd one that goes in the wrong box will shift out as I aproach because he (and it's usually a he) knows he will get caught up and removed if he doesn't do it himself.
Flown together they will play around upon landing, but if you lock them up within 15 minutes of feeding you don't get the strong bond, and the subsequent eggs.
This is what I have found anyway. Also, with this limited fraternising I have never had hens pair up.
If that happens you will get not one, but two eggy birds.

Joe,

I have found the same as you...mixed kits in my loft fly better together...I am a firm believer of housed together and fly together build team work.
