A wee hen I have sitting on eggs nibbles on and eats the polystyrene insulation on the underside of the loft roof. It does not seem to be doing it any harm, at least not as far as i can tell. Is it possibly lacking something in its diet?

All the birds are on young bird mix and have access to grit. They also get multi vitamins in their water every so often.

Hey Al, I don't know if it is lacking something in the diet, but the styrene material might be FDA approved which would mean it can be ingested without harm?? Here is a link to a thread discussing styrene and its ingestion:

STYRENE THREAD

The hen may just be bored too. LOL FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tony thanks for that, it was actually quite amusing, I hope poor Jeff doenst get scurvey!!

The hen had been in her nest box for 2 ekks solid and made a b line straight to the loft roof for a nibble. Thinking back now she also used to nibble away at the galvanised wie covering the vents.

I can only think she is seeking something else in her diet, possibly iron from the wire? The polystyrene is a strange one though.

Thanks again.

Al.
