When is wind too windy? Is there some simple little signs you use to know when it is too windy to put your birds up?

Nick.I am a poor one to even answer your question.LOL.
I have flown rollers(old birds)in winds in excess of 30 MPH and with gusts up to 50MPH.This is the extreme and this one time in pacticular was that winds picked up after the release. My birds love wind and where I live they work the updrafts to set up for the roll.I have seen them almost do lateral rolls in high wind.LOL.
I think 20 MPH winds would be the max.I would normally fly in.My problem is I can have 5mph winds at the ground level and it may be 20+ at 200 to 300 feet higher.I have to fly an older kit before flying my young to get a idea as to what the air currents are doing higher.By the way I lose at least one kit a year to them being caught up in the current and just go up in space.I have been told a barometer can help but haven't tried one yet.David

Hey Nick, for my birds, it is too windy when they start swooping, dipping and diving and are flying in a manner that will not allow them to perform properly as they are combating the wind.

Correlate this activity to how much tree branches are blowing, the way the wild birds are flying or how fast clouds are moving through the area. Then the next time before you let them out, you check these conditions first and then make the decision to let them out.

IF you fly your kits 4 or 5 days in a row, under winds that cause swooping, diving, fast turns, generally to the left...U will spend 2 months flying trying to get a "turn" out of them, You are on the verge of ruining your kit. They will fly counter clockwise, but the crossover, to clockwise is SHORT LIVED..they will turn back quickly like they are in a wind,,believe me it takes a while,Sometimes you have th throw in some old flyers to help bring them back..DO NOT FLY IN WINDS, one time is OK but be carefull....;LEO

Leo,

I agree................I guess if I think it may be TOO windy it is too windy and keep 'em in the box.

Do you agree, Leo?

Nick
