I have just gotten over an illness and had my birds locked down for about 8 months. I had them locked down in my breeding loft not a kit box.
When I put them back up into the air they did not kit at all; went in about 12 different ways and were all over the sky. I have now put them up three times and the results haven't got much better. Not only are they not kitting only 2 or 3 are rolling.
Will they improve? And, if they will how long will it take for them to reestablish a good kit in the air? Will they begin to roll with more frequency as they begin to kit?
Should I cull them all and restart?
Any suggestions?

Hey Nick, haven't heard much from you in a while! Keep putting them back in the air regularly and you will probably have them kitting much better in about 2 or 3 weeks. I had the same problem with the ones that I had on lockdown and within a couple weeks they were working together again. Russ

Thanks Leo and Russ,
Russ - The Norwoods are (at least mine) are good spinners, but they may not be the kind you will win with. They invarible were my out birds while the Dick Stephens (Hatcher) kitted well, but sometimes were just along for the ride.
Once I get these birds kitting again and they don't perform any better I am going to cull hard; thin 'em out; and rebuild. I am just competitive enough to want my birds to perform on Joe Urbon's level(right now!) and I may be too anxious. I am still deciding how long is long enough to wait for a bird(s) to perform.
Right now it is a joke................they are all over the sky and most of them are just setting back on thier tails and not completing the roll. They are doing it by themselves because they darn sure ain't kitting. I know they are out of shape physically, but damn I didn't expect it to be this bad. It may be that my disappointment is overriding my common sence.
Leo - My loft is fairly dark. The only light they get is coming from the bottom of the kit. Would you recommend closing most of it up atleast for a while to encourage kitting?

Nick, I had the same problem when I started flying after winter lockdown. Within 3-4 weeks they were kitting well again but I just don't see the performance. When I locked them down I thought they were better than I see now even after 5 weeks of flying 2-3 times per week. Maybe my standards have just risen after participating in these roller forums all winter! Out of 22 birds I held over I only plan to keep a few and they are just for backyard pleasure...not up to competition standards. I did take out the best 3 or 4 for mating though and have not flown them since last fall. I have high hopes for the new ones coming up this year. Dan

Fellows.I have similar problems with my holdover kit and I flew them all winter.I don,t have a problem with kitting but them wanting to kit to tight and wind up going left wing for 25 or 30 minutes. It is a long story and to make it short,Hawks,Wind,ME,ME,Me I thought I had ruined them and maybe did. These were 21(down to 18) picked out of over a hundred and all was rolling 20 feet+ just to get to this kit. They do a lot of Cluster flipping but just can,t seem to get in the rolling mood.Like one said tailriding like young birds and short 5 foot rolls.Today they showed me more than they have for several weeks.I am going to play with them untill I run out of kit boxes and need the one they are in for youngesters to see what happens. If they don,t get their act together they have already been warned.LOL.David P.S. And these were good enough to be considered for future breeders.
