Hi Guys, I have John Wiens family of rollers. I was told they are not deep rollers. Any chance of improving the depth? Jeff

i can sugest two things to help. the first is if you want to keep the blood pure you can take the deepest two and breed them only. try cutting the feed a bit and see if that may help but be very carful as this will weaken them and the ability to pull out will be affected (hence the deeper roll) the other soulution is to breed a deeper bird into them. i have some of the appleberry birds and they show me 50 ft with great frequency just be carfull what you breed in some deep birds are not very frequent. i have a cock bird here who has shown 200 ft rolls many times but i have to breed him to a very frequent producing hen as he may only roll 5 times in a 20 min fly. but at 200 ft that is enough for me :) tony may have some better advice chris

Hey Jeff, for starters, you won't be able to get from them what is not there. If they have never demonstrated deep rolling before, there is no reason to think that you will get it by breeding the deepest rolling ones together. (of course that depends on your definition of deep rolling! LOL)
Introducing an outcross is an option, but they are no longer the exclusive family strain you started with. However, this may be your only choice.
Another option is to track down a line of this strain that has demonstrated consistent deep rolling and pick up a cock or a pair and introduce them to your breeding program.
Is this family known for producing deep rollers? If not, you will have to bring in an outcross from a deep family. But at this point, you are essentially changing the strain and the characteristics they are known for.
You may just want to initiate your own roller family at this point and use birds from multiple families and call them something other than "John Wiens" birds. FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Chris,
When you bred the 200ft cock to the frequent hen what have you gotten? Or are they still in the process, lol.
I have a very similar mating here with a 40-50ft but frequent hen to a low 10-15ft cock. They are the only pair that hasn't laid yet and it's killing me.

Hello Guys, Thanks for your responses. I guess if I explain my situation a little more, you will all know exactly what I have going on here. 1st of all I had a hard time finding rollers in Canada. John Wiens told me he sent birds to Sask. in 1995. I tracked them down and brought home 7ybs in June. I went back a 100 mi. drive one way again in Oct. and brought back 7 more ybs and 2 old cocks bred and sent out here in 1995. Iwas there again in Jan. to pick up some crosses Bill Barret, Bill Murkley, John Wiens to use as fosters as I wanted 8 pairs of fosters for the 2 cocks and 4 hens I decided to use for breeders. I offered 1 of the 95 cocks back for Bob to breed to a good hen he had there as I noticed nice birds coming from that cock and a hen he was not paired to. Bob had 2nd thoughts anyway and wanted him back. So now I have 9 pairs fosters and the breeding pairs. The 2 breeding cocks are brothers. 3 hens are sisters from the cock that went back. The 4th hen is a sister to the 2 cocks. They are I think the best type of the bunch. I like Rick Mees idea of breeding from 1 pair for kit chemistry. He says it works. He also told me personlly John has some awesome pigeons. From what Bob told me, they are frequent but not deep. They are comp. birds and from what Rod was saying a while back the same thing, I have heard it twice now. Davd Kowalski says breed for speed and freq. and the depth will come. Possibly from better type. I don't know.
