Hello fellas, the roller pigeon community is a tough nut to crack. There seems to be an attitude among some that anything to do with the roller hobby should come at no charge.

I recently received an email from a previous visitor who literally cussed me out for converting the site to subscription only. I referred him to those free sites filled with annoying pop-up and that literally don’t change month after month and year after year. I also invited him to start his own website if he felt so strongly about it.

Even after providing this site free for years with all the time, money and effort that goes/went into it, I still would get criticized for selling bands or rollers or whatever.

Well, as with most things in life, there are the takers and the givers. Since I changed the site to a subscription only site, the takers seemed to have moved on.

I know what it takes to keep a site active, even if it is free, but I no longer have the unlimited time like I used to and feel that by providing a good source of information, articles and discussion, the true gentleman fancier will find the way back.

I have also found that those who are willing to pay their way in life know they get what they pay for and while things have slowed down, I want to believe those who have paid to participate by supporting this site are the real gentlemen of the sport and they see the value of a roller pigeon website such as this.

Newcomers that come to this site are a few clicks away from about anything they would want to know about the roller pigeon. What is not here now will find its way over time. Your support helps make this happen.

For those that have stayed I say "THANK YOU"!

I can't believe what I read coming from some of these guys that were on this site. One guy keeps on harping, does'nt post anything worth paying for and yet when he was here, he had no problem sticking out his hand for free eggs.

Hey Chris, didn't think you were at all. I thought it would be good though to explain why there has been a slow down. Things will pick up over time. I guess for now the company we keep is a little more exclusive. lol

I am glad you are finding the site beneficial. I do enjoy working on the site and developing the content. I must say, I now feel more enthused about writing as there is a paying and growing subscriber base that has "put its money where its mouth is"...heheheh

I will be using the same methods I used developing the Ruby Rollers to develop the Fireballs. I put two pairs together last week and one is about to lay if it hasn't already. I'll finish about the Fireballs on that thread...

Hey Jeff, to quote George Harrison "all things must pass". This will too. Some fellas are just wound too tight and have to lash out to express thier unhappiness.

Initially I was a little miffed at the attitudes displayed by some for my decisions, but I have gotten over it (well am trying to lol) and am moving on.

I don't read (until lately lol) what others are saying in other forums as I might feel a need to respond in kind and it is not my intention to make enemies.

The subscription fee (no longer applicable, past visitors that have purchased products will be able to post and respond to posts) will keep the riff raft out of this forum ending the sniping and thankfully we can all go back to discussing our birds and offering each other help.

Jeff, by the way, your .02 cents is worth more than most if you know what I mean...heheheh FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

I'm still here although I haven't never posted much I've visited for a good while now but just enjoy reading. I can't thank Tony enough for all he has done for the roller hobby.

Rollers are fairly new to me I've only had them for about 3/4 a year. Hawks forced me to either cull or breed from my kit birds so I have 3 decent pairs together and 1 ok pair. Haven't had a chance to fly any of their youngsters since I've already pretty much given away the first round to a father and two sons. Hoping to be moved to the new house by summer and have a kit or two in the air.

I've raised chickens for nearly 6 years now and am a Jr. in high school.

That was a little about me, hope to get to know some of yall better,
Luke

Jeo,

I hope that you are not talking about me...I am one of the people that went for the egg thing. For me it was to help out Tony. Just so you know...some of us have bought stuff from Tony and I do not think that you would no that because it is not something that you post. I myself bought a pair of Ruby Rollers, bands and tonys book. I have my own birds and can get bands from my club..but I did it because I know that he works hard at this site and I wanted to give back. My hand was out for the eggs to help out Tony in his little test. I have plenty of eggs in my loft as well as plenty of good birds. Just so you know.

Hello Paul, No it wasn't you I was talking about, it was Waabie. I had read you had a pair of ybs from Tony. Listen now, is $3.00 bucks a month too much to pay now to help the guy out?
No I didn't see the egg thing as a way to help Tony out.
At the time I could'nt have cared less what Tony did or who he sent eggs to. It would'nt have been me though to go and bad mouth someone who would have doing me a favor just the same. Not quite right where I sit. Just so you know, 10-4?

I think some of the people who were frequently posting on this site got thier feelings hurt or got a little indignant when they were asked to subscribe or to make purchase from this site. Some may soon return.................I don't know?

Many good breeders even though are fine people are extremely opinionated (by best friend is one of those people). I still like hearing from them and listening to thier ideas and hope they will return to this site.

I am probably considered by a lot of people to be one of those opinionated SOBs, but I try to keep it under some control and I try hard not to have the last word.

As for the pair of Ruby Rollers that I purchased from Tony. I never flew them because I did not want to lose them. I am breeding them and they have one in the kit box that is just starting to do little flips. They are on eggs right now. The body of there young bird in the box is a text book roller. The cock is a lavender and the hen is a mealy bar. The hen is a beuty on the perch. Scott Campbell (motherlode lofts) came over to help me vaccinate and he picked up that little hen 3 or 4 different times. He said man I love this hen..."She is a sweatheart" He said if she has a motor and will produce you are set. If you want me to send a photo of them, just e-mail me at paulfullerton@sbcglobal.net. I would send you a photo of them so you can check them out. I would keep you updated on the young too...in case you are interested in Tonys birds.

Tony does hava a little book out on how to breed better rollers. Good info,...I even used his feeding idea that is in the book...using time instead of measurements.

As for the 3.00 thing..is was not the money....for me it was like what someone said in another post..I was hurt. Because I felt that I was supporting the site through purchases. I never talked bad about Tony either. I just spoke my mind on how I felt a little hurt. I really liked the site so much....my wife was happy that I was not on it ....LOL LOL! I agree that the people that were saying mean things were not long time posters....or they have never talked to Tony. Anyway...I just spoke my mind and what I thought of the desicion and not what I thought of the person.

Anyway...anybody can e-mail me anytime and talk rollers. IF anyone want to see some of my birds and my set up....I am a featured Fancier on another site
http://www.rollerdigest.com/ Just click on fanciers. Anyway I am glad to chat again.

Hey Paul, thanks for the plug on my publication. lol I am glad to hear you are using the timer method to feed. How long before you and the birds got the hang of it? How long do you feed to get 30 to 40 minutes of flying time out of the kit?

Have you tried going to the edge and feed them to fly just over 20 minutes? If you do this let me know. Hot birds may come crashing down on you.

What type of feed mix are you using? Really curious to hear your results up to now. FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Lets get a couple of things straight. I offered to help Tony in an experiment not for the freebie, but to see how far these eggs could be shipped and survive. I live in Central Canada. If they survived the trip here it would have been a great success. I have raised pigeons for the past twenty five years and don’t need Tony’s or anyone elses birds to make my birds better. If the eggs had of made it here and hatched they would have most likely been given to a new person starting out because I don’t introduce new birds to my program. I have a closed loft. For your information it turns out it was an interesting turn of events. It turns out that the eggs would not have been permitted across the border so we didn’t even try. You need to get your facts straight before you start judging me. Then you say I didn’t have anything worth paying for well that is good cause I don’t charge at all for my two cents it is free and I will be sure to give it to you. As for me attacking Tony on other sites I didn’t say anything there that I wouldn’t have said to Tony in person or on this site if he hadn’t of gone postal on all of us and locked us out. I am not even sure where you are coming from? Were you even part of this site before Tony “PRIVATIZED “ it. I never had an issue with Tony as a person only that I along with others here were warned about a certain topic and told not to post on said topic then after all of that Tony started the very topic up that he said to leave alone. Then when we called him on it he didn’t apologize or remove (removal is what he has done to many topics he deemed inappropriate and will probably do to this one) the topic or revamp it he just locked all of us out without a single word or explanation. When we tried to reach him via email the was no response. Not even after two weeks! Further for your education it wasn’t the $3.75 membership that most of us were pissed about it was the lack of respect that we felt Tony showed towards us. It was like we didn’t matter that he made the site and no one else had contributed to the sites success. When anyone who was here knows all to well that this site is great in part by all of Tony’s hard work and dedication to it, but it is also great because of the valuable information that other fanciers put in here. If Tony wanted to go private he should have got input from the people that post here. I know he didn’t have to but it would have been the respectful thing to do. He also could have said guys this is what I am planning on doing. Even went as far as to email his members of the change but it was done in a moment of anger and or frustration and I can sympathize with that but when you are wrong you should apologize for your mistakes so feelings can heal. So for your information it wasn’t the membership or the “PRIVATIZATION” it was the manner in which it all came about. Just a quick word of advice to Tony. Don’t get to rapped up in editing everything that is said on this site. Put a disclaimer in the membership and let people express their opinions. “Roller fanciers are passionate about their birds and the hobby. Without the passion there is no hobby.” (Warby) Peoples feelings may get a little bruised but as you yourself can attest to you get over it and go on. Good Luck to you Tony in your future endeavours!

Tony,

I used your timing method at the begining. The birds caught on as well as I in about a week. That is all it took to find the right time. I do not use the time thing anymore..because now I know what my birds need. Before I would feed I would measure the food and then when The time was up I would again measure the food. Subtract what they ate and came up with an amount. I did this for summer and WInter and took lots of notes. Now I know what amount to feed without the timer. I also realized how much per bird. So I could figure it out no matter how many birds I had in the kit. If things get a little out of wack...because we all know that the birds change...weather....etc. I will go back to the time method to get it all back in order. THat method works real good...but after awhile you just get a feel for your birds and the feeding.

As for taking them to the edge..Yes I did try it...to just get the 20 mins in. It did not work to well...the birds performance went down. They lacked the energy to perform. My birds seem to like the 30-40 min mark...during that Time the roll was great and they are active...because the are happy and they have the energy. I have tried the tight rope walking thing with the birds..putting them to the edge numerous times...and it did not work for me.One would come down early..they looked tired...the kit was flying low the normal stuff. I kind of look at it this way...would you send an athlete into a competition starving....NOPE..you put them in healthy and at there peak. I do have to say...some birds bumped hard coming in..the roll was poor quality...they looked nervous when flying..just out of wack. I don't know But I feel my birds like to roll and I do not have to really pull it out of them...Hell Look at my score in the World Cup..I changed what I usually do and cut the feed to much and they looked like shit...three days earlier they looked great...and 6hrs after the fly....I let them out after the fly with some food in there crop and they were on fire...I have found out the hard way to just stay consistant. The Fall fly I am not going to change a thing...no taking them to the edge and then I will see if it is any better.

As for what I feed the kit birds....I am going to get hell for this...but I am back to a pellet mix. I mix 50/50 wheat and milo...5 parts wheat and milo to 1.5 parts 28%pellet.During the molt I go to 2 parts pellet and add .5 parts sauflower. I feed that mix on the fly day for my older birds and wheat/milo only on the rest days...if they get lean I give them a little more of my mix. The young birds get the mix everyday as They are growing and they fly every day. I have tried peas...and all the other stuff and I just like the pellet mix I made. It took me a long time to come up with the ratios that I use. There water consumption is no different between the pellet mix and anything else that I have tried. The poop is firm and not runny. I don't know it works for me. I just say do not knock it until you try it. Hope I answered your questions Tony...and man that little black hen gets better every day..she is a rocket...I hope that she holds up. SO far she is pretty stable.

Paul.Seems like you and me are running pretty much the same.My feed mix is a little different but our approach is close to the same.
I answer a lot of emails and post on several different sites so if I repeat myself somewhere just overlook me.I can,t keep up with everything.LOL.
I said in an email or post that I think a lot of competitions would be won if morw fliers would just fly like us backyard fliers or everyday type flying. If I am able to compete this fall or whenever this is the way I am going to fly.I think I have a better chance of at least putting some points up.
I too have seen in my birds that if I try to fine tune the timing they are very unpredictable.I just keepim fed and flyim. They seem to roll because they are happy and not because they are forced into it.I have tried everything I have heard(almost)and it always blows up at some point.David

David,

Well, for the last couple of years I tried to do the fine tuning thing...and it did blow up in my face. There were days before comps that I tried cutting back hard to..and sometimes it worked out..but the next time it was a nightmare..birds were pulling from the kit, Doing little rolls, birds coming down early, the kit was all disoriented....But staying consistant is the key. The Fall fly I am not changing anything....I am going to fly like it is another day. I have not been practicing what I preach..I always say that this hobby is not brain surgery so do not make it that way...I agree..I have found out that the birds being healthy and happy is where it is at. I also watch the birds too...I like the ones that seem like they like to roll...those birds you never see them doing little flips or fighting it. Don't worry...I am the same way...I leave post hear and there and it feels like I am hearing and echo! Good luck when you compete...just do what you do and you will do fine.
