Hi,
I have had pigeons for a year know I am 16 and I want to put them in at fair during summer time.I have show rollers and I will just put them in conformation but I do not know how I should prepare them for this. I show horses but I know how to get them redy for show grooming stlying products exc. But with my pigeons what should I do to prepare them for show such as products and feed. I feed them Bird fanciers the peas, corn and seed mix.

Alos I need to know if i should be puting my breding pigeons on a new feed they all look kinda ruff I feed the a crushed corn and chicken feed mix plus there pigeon food.
Thanks,
Catherine

I think you are on the wrong website for the Show Breed but I'll direct you in the right direction...
There is a fellow out there promoting more guys to join in on the Show Roller breed. His name is Ron S. here is his website: http://www.showrollers.com/
He's a first CLASS guy and I'm sure he'll direct you in the right direction.
Personally I think Show Rollers are ugly pigeons but as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Good luck in your hobby... maybe one day, you'll drop the Show birds and pick up a hobby that will bring you some real joy... Birmingham Rollers.

Ignore the message from Thor and welcome to the hobby. Show, flying, or racing, it's all about the pigeon.

One of the best things you can do for your birds to get them into shape for your show is to continue doing what you're doing AND to make sure that they can take as many baths as they want and when they want. For years, people, both flying and show, used to ask me what I did to get such great feather on my birds-- the only answer was the baths. Birds can take care of themselves if given the chance. The big thing is to make sure that when they do bathe that they don't get to sit in wet crap, etc, afterward, so bathe them outside if possible. You'll hear some scream that you're washing off the bloom, don't believe it. Birds that have a lot of baths have more bloom than they know what to do with, just don't bathe them for about 72 hours before a show.

Also, you can add some safflower to their feed, just a tad or/and take about 1/4 tsp of salad oil to about a 3 lb coffee can of feed. Add the oil, coat till each seed is just BARELY coated and feed the birds maybe twice a week with that.

That helps bring a sheen to the feather.

To add to what Frank offered, the best results will come if your loft is set up in a way that provides good perches void of obstacles, that being perches that don't allow the bird to mess up its flights and tail by constantly rubbing on some part of the perch or loft. Box perches are good for flying, but not good for show conditioning. The floor media should be something that doesn't stain the birds and should be dry. A good solid pigeon mix with an additional oil seed such as safflower is good. As noted above, baths are very important, but even more so is what you put in the bath water. Add some Permectrin II (you have horses so you know what this is) to the bath water, about a cap full to a few gallons. Don't over do it or they will be oily for a while. Add a pinch of apple cider vinegar to help loosen hardened stuff and finally, add a small amount of bluing to the water to brighten up the white (if they have any) as well as help to remove any stains. It is important to practice pest management all year, most important after the molt. There is nothing more sickening than for a judge to pick up a nice pigeon and find it has feather lice and bullet holes through the flights from feather mites. The Permectrin in the bath will help with that. Before taking your birds to the show, make sure and clean their feet off and around their beaks. And most important, if your birds appear ill or if you have had an unexplained illness effect some of your birds, DO NOT TAKE THEM TO THE SHOW! Good luck with your showing.
Brian.
