I was wondering what is the best nesting material to use for the birds? I heard pine needles may be too sharp for the squabs.I also heard those nest felts sold be Foys & Jedds are good.Let me know what you use.

I have tried about everything I know of and the best I have found(that I like) is Alphafa hay.The birds like it,the young do good and it seems to be a good absorbent material.
When I got back into rollers after a 20+ year absence I found that a lot of the birds had lost the know how to build a nest. I was told that it came from the felt nest pads and not givin anything to build a nest with.I tried the nest pads with doves but didn't like them.
Most of my breeders will build their own nest.A few pair is lazy but I will start their nest and when she lays her eggs and is down tight I will lay some along side her nest. She will always work the material around her nest.David

Our favorite pigeon RolyPoly gets very excited when we put pine needles in on the floor. He immediately starts taking them up to UpsyDaisy in the nest box, and she makes a neat weaved nest around herself. They haven't hurt any of the babies that we can see. The Christmas twins we wrote about are now up and flying and learning to feed from the pan. Phil and Debbie

I use pine sawdust and the long pine neddles.....the short stiff one's will stab everybody. I have used the clay nestbowls for abut 5 years now and I am going to try the brown plastic one's that Jedds sells this year.....Glenn

What do you guys think about Tobacco stalks & cedar shavings? I heard they keep the parasites away.Do they mean those flys that are flat looking & mites. What are those things that look like flat house flys? will cedar stop them to?
Gonzalo.

I can understand how Tobacco will kill little pests since it kills millions of humans.

I use the LONG pine needles. They are soft and can't hurt anything.
