Hello, just would like to hear what you guys think about feeding just Milo nothing else to flyers...age is not matter young or mature as long as they are in the kit box they get Milo.

I fed straight Milo for months and noticed following

1) Roll quality suffer
2) Birds do not like to eat
3) Birds get airy
4) Fly really high

Thanks, -Rauf

HI Rauf, Here are a few things to consider...You can feed straight grains of your choice,, IF you do FINE..REMEMBER to put VITAMINS in their drinking water two times a week...MAN CANNOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE...Bill Pensom fed good feed to his kits...Stan Plona fed high grade scratch....L.Thompson...fed wheat 10% peas, some guys are feeding wheat and 20% pellets an doing well on it. If you have been on milo that long..? My birds would CRAZY flyers Remember you are training ATHLETES..GOOD LUCK...LEO

Rauf now we are talking an even weaker grain than wheat, Just as wheat is has it's uses but straight Milo after a period of time would shrivel my birds up. It is just to weak. Crack one open it's an airy grain. Like Wheat it can't give you what isn't there when the birds need something more. It is just another tool

Hi Rauf-,
I had a friend that did the same thing. He shot his birds up with straight milo for a month and they went down the drain. As I viewed his birds in the air many times during this straight milo process, I noticed that his birds sure did work hard but lacked air time. Maybe it was the frequency or maybe it was that they were starving to death but they would fly shorter and shorter until they only lasted 10-15 minutes in the air before dropping in... many times even lesser.
I came to a conclusion from feeding straight milo that it would:
- give more frequency
- break the birds down which caused deterioration in quality
- slowly starved his birds to death!
By looking at my buddy's birds during this experiment... I would say that anyone's bird would all starve until they drop dead.
I believe one's fliers can do good on straight wheat but straight milo for a long period of days is flirting with the devil.
A question for you Rauf... when you were shooting them up with straight milo... how many times a day did you feed them and how much?
My buddy fed his birds once a day and would give them the same amount he would if he was feeding them a 50% wheat 50% milo.
I think that played a big factor in why his bird went down the drain. If he was to give them double the feed... his birds probably could of gone longer then they did.
Flying them,
Thor

P.S. If I recall, W. H. Pensom didn't feed his birds with quality feed at all but just a plain more chicken scratch type feed... so did Stan Plona.

Hi Thor, I was giving them about a tablespoon/bird...before I started on straight milo they were not doing good fly time may have gotten lazy as being locked up for months.

I have them on straight milo to burn off fat and get them more airy which did happen but in about few weeks I noticed they seem to be getting really light, the major thing which I noticed on straight milo was the quality of roll which start getting really sluggish and after few weeks they were back where they started from…

I think straight milo break then down really well that they do not even had energy to fly for 10 minutes. It did help me pushing the birds up in the air initially after winter locked down…I believe this grain is really useful for two things but can not be use as staple diet 1) Break the kit down 2) or burn the fat off lazy/fat bird and make them to stay in the air

Thanks, -Rauf

Hi Rauf,
Why didn't you just use Barely to drop the birds wieght? I use Barely myself and it has done quite well in that department.

Yes Thor but barley is really light grain. My birds can go on 100% milo for weeks however if feed them just barley then
1) They fly really low 2) Roll Down because of #1. 3) Do not like to eat

Thanks, -Rauf
