What single trait does the best birds in your loft and kit boxes possess (ie eye color; color of feather; feather type; larger or the smaller birds; clean legged; grouse legged; bars; selfs; checks; grizzles; badges; beard; baldheads - anything that runs dominate thru your best performing birds)?

Yes Nick they have a trait I like, they all roll.
The rest is not that important to me (eyes, size, color ,muff, clean legged, keel, temperment,)

Nick,
I had a similar question myself. It just occurred to me that my foundation cock is a White Tick. In the breeding season that just passed, I bred him to 5 different hens. He bred more Tort's then anything else (1 White Tick, 3 Red Grizzle, 1 Blue Blue self, 2 Lavenders, 2 Black Grizzles, 2 Red Checks and a Ash Red Spread). So far, the better birds seem to all be of the Reds (Grizzles, Red Check, Ash spread), White Tick, and Lavender. This White Tick has been line bred down from two main birds, a Champion Stan Plona Lavender (bred from J. Leroy Smith's stock) and a Stan Plona White Tick Champion pictured in 'True Spinners' book by David Kolwaski and Thomas R. Hatcher's 'The Last of the Greats'. Looking at the pedigree of this bird, it seems that those colors above seem to dominate it's background. If this holds true, then my loft should be full of these colors and hardly anything else. I think this rule is only true in a closely knit family tho.
I just got done watching Rick Schoening's 'Visit to England Lofts' video. In the section of Bill Baretts visit (if I recall correct), Mr. Baretts mentioned that a certain color also dominated his loft (I believe it was Black Mottles/Spangles) and that it should have because his top birds were of that type/color. That was my third time watching that particular video and only just now did I catch that comment. Let's see what I'll catch next time viewing that video...lol.
After thinking back to other closely knit family... for example, Dave Hendersons which Rec. Red seems to dominate, there might be something to it.
It only makes sense that if you started with just one Champion (for example a White Tick) that his progeny should be of the same.
That's why I'm planning for the future by linebreeding a foundation Blue Bar Hen. If all goes right, this Blue Bar Hen should produce quality hard colored birds - such as Blue Bar and Blue Check (if mated to a check carrying Cock). This hen was bred down from the Blue side of the same family as the White Tick so it should cross well together.
The Problem with having a White Tick as a foundation is that it is of the Grizzle factor. Of course after a 'x' amount of breeding Grizzles w/Grizzles/Lavenders/etc. or as we call them - soft color w/soft color, it will soon be diluted to a point that the quality of roll will be diminshed quite a bit. That's where breeding it back to the Blue Line will come in handy. Well, atleast that's the plan.lol.
Of course this could all just be in my head that certain colors will out perform others too but only time will tell.

What's your opinion?
