Does anyone still chose stock birds from the ground, or is it still only done by what is done in the air? I'm not talking about color, but can some stock rollers be chosen even though they are less that ideal in the air? Can a bird still be a champion without ever being flown out. A roller could be ruined if allowed to mature past the early learning stage. How do we avoid throwing out the champion with the true cull? Has anyone bred from a roller, not because of his performance but a gut feeling? I'm assuming you know the family extreemly well in order to do this.

No,never, at least not any more. Even knowing you birds and having a tightly bred family in my opinion out of the air is the only way to go. Sure you can get lucky here and there grabbing what "looks" good off of the perch, or you can make you own luck by flying the bird hard and finding out what it's made of.

WHP..Interesting question..I tend to agree with Scott..I generally don't allow a bird near the breeder loft until it has really performed in the air for a while. Racing homer guys love the pedigree..and that is one of many tools but we all know that a champion does not put a baby champion in every egg. Performance birds are just that..performance birds. Some good ones cannot pass (or do not pass on) the genes of performance to their young. Some do and that is the beauty of breeding your own young birds or purchasing 'proven breeders' which I would suggest if you know the process and length of time and the number of birds the owner has gone through to get the proven breeders..the price will be high in dollars and cents. Upon occasions someone will gift you a pair of proven breeders..guard them with your life. :-) Value the friendship also. End of the line..performance is about the only way..but not a sure fire way to pick breeders...by the way if anyone knows the surefire way of 100% pick them..let us all in the know..ha
