One of my cocks rolled down and hit the roof on Friday, he had another fly and made it back to the loft ok, no signs of injury. On Saturday he only flew for 5 minutes, when he came back to the loft i noticed one eye looked rather swollen, damp and the eye lid seemed to be a bit lazy.

Having read about one eye cold in a book it just about fits the bill. The suggested treatment was very brief, give cod liver oil with its feed and bathe in watered down optrex (an eye treatment for humans).
Three questions.
Could this have contributed to the roll down, he is quite deep on occasions but has never come down before?

Is the treatment above the best way ahead?, I have separated him from the rest of the birds and have bought the Optrex.

Is there anything i should be giving the rest of the birds?

All advice appreciated.

Al.

One more question.

What would I do without this site???????????????

Mac!

Did you notice the eye before the crash. I had one of my birds crash into a roof and it had a messed up eye afterwards. Sometimes it is a result of the crash. I thought to myself...I guess my eye would be messed up if I was doing a bunch of spins and crashed into a roof. Ok, to the point, what I did is just rest my bird for a couple of days and fed him up. The eye got better on its own. I did put a drop of visine in the eye too. If the eye does not get better you can get an eye drop medicine from your local feed store. I would assume that his eye is messed up from the crash...feed him up...give him a couple of days or rest...give hime a drop of visine...and keep an "eye" on it...if it gets worse you can medicate.

Hi Al,
Take a look at the photo attached to this page:

If your bird is a constant bumper with decent velocity, this will be a regular site for sore eyes.

Al, it is very common for a bird to come home with a swollen eye socket after coming on contact, sometimes violent, with an object. It can happen crashing into anything, even another bird while rolling. The worst thing you can do is fly the bird the next day, only makes matters worse. The best thing you can do is toss him in the loft with the regular non-flyers and let him heal up. From my experience with it it usually takes a good 7-10 days for it to heal properly, 10 being better. If is not healed properly, when the bird rolls again the swelling comes back and you are back to square one again.
If you believe your bird has an eye cold, the eye will not usually be swollen, but wet around the eye and the cere a little reddish from irritation. Aureomycin in the water is the best cure. Aureomycin tablets, if you can get them, are even better during the colder months. One a day for 10 days. I've had limited success with Terramycin creme which I administer directly to the eye, followed by a pinch of aureomycin powder. Birds don't like it but it helps too. By the way, eye colds are a form of a respiratory cold which like the latter, is contagious. Though I doubt your has an eye cold, its good to know how to treat it when it does pop up. Good luck.
Brian.

In mid summer, the same thing happend to one of my hot birds (she came in at 3 months 30' and fast). It had the same symptoms you discribed, but it turned out to be she was changing eye color. She changed from both bull eyes to one bull and the other is pearl. She is a baldhead silver/red bars w/f/t. I posted here a while back asking if such a thing ever happend to anybody and the response was NO. I let her rest for about 4 days while waiting for medication to arrive thinking it was eye cold, and she was fine after that. She is an oddeye bird now. What's odd is her brother was a late develper, came in to roll at 7 months, same 30' and fast.

Happy Holidays to all

Jay

Thanks again everyone for the replies.

Another lesson learned, the eye appears to have cleared up on its own, must have been a result of the bump. Looks like I have got myself some Optrex for these bleary eyed mornings coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Best wishes to all.

"One-eye colds"...last year I had an out break of one eye colds in my racing loft. Checking it out I found that generally it is a lack of vit. A and coupled with an extreamly dry situation birds come down with it. Also I am told it is quite contagious. I believe Foys or Seigal sell a product called "One drop..One eye...One Time"..I purchased it and it does work very well. Cheap. This year I had one bird with it..one drop and 2 days later all gone.
