Fellas, Have a 9 month old hen, grizzle, Mason. She is lookin' pretty whacked out. She cannot fly higher than two feet without rolling down/ to the left. This is the crazy part. She seems to only be able to move to the left in a circle when she starts to move when excited at feed time. This is the oddest. When she looks at anything above her head level, her head drops level/ or slightly lower than her body and the head spins completey upside down then back to sideways very slow. Quite freaky it is. Also, her eyes look diulated in the light, one big and one normal. She was a good flyer just coming into the roll 5-10ft and never rolled down or even close excellent control. Just went out to the loft and there she was all wild looking. I have the "Pigeon" by Levi and the closest I saw was what was called Vertigo. What do you guys thinks. I am one step away from the shovel. Hate to lose this bird, or any for that matter if it is something I am doing or failing to do. Has anyone seen this before and is it conatagious, Meds, or just cull?

I am afraid these symptons are of PMV (Paramyxovirus). Spreads quickly Chachi. If she's very valueable you may be able to save her with a lot of care but you need to get her away from your other pigeons ASAP ... otherwise cull her ASAP. You should vaccinate all the rest of your pigeons with PMV vaccine ASAP. There's no cure for PMV and in my opinion it's one of the saddest and worse of diseases of all. I think Vertigo is what they called PMV in the "old days". Good luck buddy as I don't wish a PMV breakout on anyone's loft. ---------- Birmingham Rollers by AD3 Website

What would you recommend I vaccinate my birds with and can I pick it up at Foy's? I have a few of a lot of breeds of rare rollers and tumblers I picked up from various people and I have no idea if they have been vaccinated. I also have a kit of Danny Horner's rollers coming this week. I had been out of the hobby for 30 years and have just got back into it in September, so I am really out of the loop.
Will it hurt to vaccinate them again if someone else already has? I know from breeding my German Shepherd dogs that vaccinations are very dangerous, they can get the very disease you are vaccinating against from the vaccine I have the de-wormer on order.
I also want to thank you guys for this forum. It's been a lot of help and you all are surprisingly considerate of one another. Most forums are only a bunch of contention but this is the exception and you are to be congratulated. Even though you are a little rough on poor Stan ;) ---------- Alan

Alan, BMV is a nasty desease. Even if you cure the bird, will always be a carrior of it and can infect others from time to time. The only way to save your birds is to get rid of the sick one and vacinate the ones that don't show of the syptoms yet. Keep Horner's birds away for a while until you vacinate and make sure everything is under control. Otherwise, you will be asking for a heap of trouble. Also vacinate Horner's birds to prevent them from getting the BMV.
Foy's carry the medications. Good Luck.

Hi Chachi, Here is what you need to do.. Get the PMV vacine, right now and give it to all your birds,, get any thing looking dumpy, away from your lofts now..Put the birds on red cell vitamins or some really good strong vitamins and probiotics. Try to keep them extremely healthy for the next couple weeks, fly nothing..Go rent a propane weed burner, and heat up as hot as you feel your loft floors and walls can stand the heat.. Then get an antibacterial spray, industrial strength is best and spray the whole loft!! PMV will spead by your shoes, so you will track it to your friends house if you are not careful. Put some of the industrial solution in pan and step in it, each time you leave the loft,, or better yet, get a pair of shoes, you only wear while in the loft.. You will need to vaccinate once a year after this, for a while Chachi,, good luck!! KGB

Fellas, Thanks for the quick response. I knew I should have got right down to business with that bird. Guess you guys know the deal, it ain't as easy as it sounds to make the hard call when your just startin' out. The needs of the many far outway the needs of the few. It's not easy to say, but I just now went right outside and did what had to be done. Isolated the other birds outside the loft in the fly pen and will keep them there for several days until this situation is under control or sure. Questions Is PMV- Conatgious to cats, dogs, and I have a 6 month old baby(very important about baby). I have been in the coop several times in the last 2 days and trompin' around the house with my shoes on all over the carpet( I think). How do you guys recomend vaccinating the other rollers I have? Kinda knee jerkin' here. Ready to dig a hole on anything that looks funny. How long does it take for symptoms to appear in a bird if infected? will keep you guys posted, and the hits just keep comin' ChaChi p.s Just ordered the PMV vaccine through the mail from Global pigeon supply/needle and bottle. Will be doing a little doctor work tommorow when it gets here. What I have read to do an injection is to go halfway down the back of neck and pinch skin to get a pocket under skin and stick bird their. Does that sound about right? Also going out to loft and scrape again. Usually scrape one good time a week and never any food left on loor. Going to bleach the crap out of that loft and let dry until I can find a good bacteria killer to spray or dust.

It's not contagious to dogs, cats & humans. You are on the right track Chachi. The directions included when you buy the vaccine are very clear. Here are a couple website in case you have not visited them that can give you better info. than I can. Again, good luck bud.

Whoa fellas, don't get the guy thinking he has PMV just yet. There are a wide range of ailments that have similar symptoms to PMV. The most evident symptom with a PMV infection is clear water shits and the tendency to walk backwards. No other ailments that I know of cause a bird to do those things, so if your bird isn't doing those things, and is healthy other than having a serious nervous glitch, I wouldn't suggest the worst then hope for the best, though it is always wise to take precautions such as doing what KGB mentioned. It does not mean you have PMV. If you want a straight answer post it with the state lab. If the bird is as healthy as you say it is, barring the faulty circuitry, and no other birds are ill, I say what you have there is just a mentally retarded roller. It's a cull regardless so there is no point to keep it and see if it will change or get worse. There is a tendency to call anything that looks "shaky" as being PMV. Most of the time only a very small percent of similar descriptions end up actually being PMV, most end up being bacterial in nature. I've seen rollers and other pigeons do what you said yours is doing. Hell I watched one's roller maker get jambed and the bird stood there on the roof for most of the day with it's nose on the roof and walking (sort of tripping) in circles. Sometimes it would try to pull its head up and would end up almost rolling over like a dog. Next day the bird was fine. But someone seeing it could have started shouting PMV and scared the shit out of the owner, which, would have been totally wrong. I had a bird get Vertigo once. It is a true disease, or more of a degradation of the nervous system for some reason. Healthy pigeon that suddenly started turning its head upside down and doing other odd things, none of which were ever passed onto any other bird in the loft and the bird lived for a long time with these symptoms before I finally just put her down as it was difficult for her to eat. It is wise to assume the worse, but that doesn't imply you have the worse. JMHO Brian.

If you've introduced new birds to your loft recently, then it is possible that one of them is a carrier of BMV and infected one of the birds in the loft. If you have not introduced any new birds, then look at other possible issues like Brian suggested. Not all BMV cases causes the pigeon to walk backward, but in all cases causes the nick to flop around and to rest in a unnatural way. I hope that what effected your bird is not BMV for your birds sake and yours. What helps is to call Foy's and talk to the owner. he is pretty much know allot about deseases and medication. That is what I usually do b4 buying any unncessary medication. Best of Luck.. Jay

Chachi, in '03 Ihad the same symptoms in three birds over a two month period. one died, onerecovered and was killed by a Coopers, and one I stocked and succesfully bred out of this season. No other birds showed any symptoms. At the same time West Nile Virus wiped out the crows, hawks, and horned owls in this area. (They've all returned, sadly enough.) This season none of my birds exhibited any of these symptoms. I,m thinking that maybe my birds had West Nile. Good Luck!!

I am trying to get a top quality pair or pairs of rollers and I was hoping you guys could recommend someone who might be willing to part with some. I would like to see them them fly first. My purpose is to start breeding a kit for my self. I live in NJ but I would be willing to go most anywhere. To get them.
