Hi all. Could you give us some advice on breeding. We have two pair which we bought as breeders and between them they had five babies this year. The question is should we fly the babies to see who rolls or should we pick a pair or two out of them and breed to get more pigeons so we can fly more at a time? We do know that one of the babies by the name of ZigZag rolls as he got out by accident and rolled very prettily at a young age. We just don't want to lose a pigeon by flying them as we have so few. Our goal is not to compete, but to have about ten nice flyers for backyard viewing and some breeders to enjoy watching in the coop.
Also SkyRoller, one of the offspring, has hooked up with his sister TipTop. I see by the posts that you guys inbreed, so should we let them go ahead?
One more question about leg bands. We didn't put any on the offspring this year. How do you pick out the numbers on the bands?
Thanks for any help for us new guys. You can see photos of the birds at this link: http://www.geocities.com/mdabw_ba_ma/pigeons.html?1099629814360

Hello Rolypoly. If you homed your offspring and you don't have a predator problem you should fly them out and further enjoy your rollers. Since you don't have many and wish to get your numbers up you can go the other route as well. Depends on how you feel. For example, it's hard for me to stock youngsters that have never flown . . . . I am addicted to the roll and have a need to watch them perform first. You might even be able to breed and fly them at the same time, as I hear some homer fanciers do. Both routes have their pros and cons but if you have a predator problem, definately stock the young and wait until they leave. Hope this gives you a little insight. :o) Cheers! ---------- Birmingham Rollers by AD3 Website

AD3, I like your website, put it in Favorites. What color do you call your F117 bird?

Trying to learn how to recognize colors myself :o) Though, this bird looks recessive red and I believe he is ..... there's blue running throught the red coloring. His tail is more blue than red. Me and a buddy were discussing this birds color as we both read and hear that recessive reds have no other color in them. His "real" color is blue check. Makes it a bit confusing .. LOL .. It's a Recessive Red though :o) PS: glad you enjoyed the website. ---------- Birmingham Rollers by AD3 Website

I saw those images of your rollers. Nice pictures :o) Actually those all look like Ash Reds. TipTop and ZigZag are ash red checks. SkyRoller is a ash red bar. Maybe the images are a bit deceiving but this is what they look like. Recessive Red generally is a very bright reddish color that doesn't look "ashy". ---------- Birmingham Rollers by AD3 Website

That's good to know. The photos of the youngsters were taken when they were "teens" and ZigZag and TipTop have become more red as they grew up, but probably are more ash red than bright red. The youngest not pictured is very ashy colored with red bars on his wings.
What do you all think of changing the mates around. Do you try different mates to get different colors and then see who rolls the best? I know that sounds very amatuerish, but just wondered.
