Hey guys, I have a roller in my breeder loft that has a habit of spinning in the loft and the other day I noticed that it was dragging it's tail. Well to get to the point I think it has a broken tail. ("Is this possible") If it, is there any way of fixing it or does it just heal on it's own. All info and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks John Holy Rollers Loft

The broken tail or bum tail is usually more like a severe bruise like what we commonly see with a bird that hit something. A trick a friend showed me was to hold the bird facing you and fan open the tail repeatedly..open, close, open, close..etc. Do this a few times a day to exercise the tail muscle area and the bruising will go away much faster. They will heal naturally..usually, but this seems to help get in working again sooner from what I have experience. Good luck. Brian.

Brian, sounds like Jerry has been talking to you. LOL
What I have found works, is to pull all of the tail feathers out, and then let them grow back in. What this does is take all the weight off of the tail, when the tail grows back it will usually have it's normal flexability again. It is also said that pulling the tail of the bird also helps it get over minor ailments, which I have found to be true.

Rick I have also heard that if you pull the tail feathers that for some reason unbenounced to me it triggers the healing process and I have tried it with some sucess. I have had young birds that look like they are going down hill on me and pulled the tail and had them come right back. I have also heard that if you fan the tail open and close several times thruought the day that it also promotes the healing of the bruised tail but keep in mind that sometimes they are actually broken and will not repair themselves.
