Has anyone ever heard of a bird having a reaction to wormer? The reason I ask is, about ten days or so ago I wormed my birds with wazine. I got it from the farm store , guy said a lot of homer guys use it. I used the prescribed amount and may have even gone a bit light. After three days I had the birds out in the pen and noticed a blue bar cock not quite right , looked a bit clumsy. I pulled him out and as I looked for him in the loft he was twitching his head and acting strange. I thought poison right off the bat. I kept him in the house, under the watchful eye of my wife, for a couple of days. His droppings were pretty much normal,he drank and ate just a bit. He felt a bit light.
I put him back in after a couple of days and he still seems a bit off although the twitch is gone. He does`nt navigate well and seems to be having trouble seeing.
my plan is to give him another week or so then I may have to cull him. Any thoughts or suggestions?
thanks guys

I have not heard of the medicine you used. Was is put in the water? This bird could have drank more than others and have a reaction to it. Is it the only bird sick? Maybe it is just alergic to it. If you have others with similar reactions then you should use a product from Jedds or another pigeon supply store. I use medi-worm pills from Jedds. You give one pill to each bird on an empty gizzard. This way they all get the right dose. Many take the water out the day before with water type medicines, but you can have some birds drink alot and some will not drink at all. When I put in Vitamins I notice the water is hardly changed ( level of water) at all. They don't like the smell or the color. Eventually they will drink but may take until the next day. I also give a anti-biotic vitamin and then follow up with good gut bacteria in the water after I give the mediworm pills. Treating birds one at a time is a time consuming process but hey the birds are worth the effort to treat them individually and know for sure they have been dosed. I am sure others use Ivomectin or Ivomec and other stuff with good results, but I just like the pill per bird. I also have a supply of 4 in 1 in the pill form. That way the water doesn't get spoiled as long. I understand the best way to use water medicine is to put it in the cage and then refriderate it and return it again so it stays cold in summer. It would last all day in winter. The directions always said to change daily with this kind of stuff. So as not to cost a fortune you can put it in for an hour in the morning and return again in evening when doseing medications. You should isolate this bird just incase it has a disease that the wormer you used, made it surface? Good luck. BIll

I am going to guess this bird is feeding young, and has ingested too strong a dose. I believe you are supposed to use 1 oz of Wazine, to a gallon of water. What did you use? It should also only be given for 1 day, then follow up with Pro-Bios so you can build back the gut bacteria.

This bird may be having health problems, thus drank large volumes of water, which some sick birds do, due to dehydration. This would account for the overdose.

I once overdosed my birds with Emtryl, had them bumping in to walls, not able to fly, same symptoms as you have described.

Hi Rick
Thanks for responding. No babies it is an 9 month young bird. I used 1 teaspoon in 32 oz of water for two days. None of the other birds are exhibiting any of these symptoms. I don`t have any pro bios. Is there a suitable sub?
What became of the bumping bird you had?
thanks again

Kenny,

suitable substitute to Pro-Bios is plain yougert. Mix about a tablespoon to a galon of water. Separate the birds for few more days and it will come around. Feed it plenty of good mix. Good Luck
Jay
