Some of my birds are losing neck and head feathers. Is this part of the molt, insects, hot weather?

Can anyone define the problem and help me with a solution, or is it even a problem?

Jigger, most likely it's just the molt but look for parasites. Look along their flight feathers for mites and as you handle them watch for pigeon lice. If you see nothing, then wait a week and check again, still nothing, just the molt. Do they look like there is any blood? If yes then an older bird could be pecking them. I hope this is some help.

Take care

Alot of my birds are pretty heavy into the molt and some are starting to get the bald head also. Look for what Thom described and dry scaly skin. Probably just the molt.

Jigger loosing feathers on the head is natural! To help prevent it try rubbing some Rogain on their head! Works for my birds. Just Kidding!
Take care,
Raul.

Jigger, it just the molt. To help the birds with the molt, give some black sunflower seeds and some extra safflower in there feed, the oils help with the new feathers. Also so vitimans or a small amount of red cell in the water would help aswell.

You can add some epsom salts to the bath water. It will help relax the birds during the moult some and if you have any parasites it will help get rid of them.

wannaroll,

How much is "some epsom salts", ie how much per gallon for example?

Jigger Add Boraxo at 2 tbl spoons to a gallon of bath water. This will help the molt, and also debug the birds. You can even sprinkle a little in the nest bowls to reduce mites / lice and other pest. Oh and sweep it in your carpet to rid it of fleas if you should have the peoblem.
