Hey Guys;
Do you have birds that spin in the loft?Over the years I have had a lot of them that roll down on the floor.Years ago I noticed one red barred cock would roll down in the loft every time he clapped his wings,to chase a hen.I came into the loft one day and found him dead on the floor,still warm.He had rolled and smacked the corner of a box I had on the floor.I wondered if this was a common occurance in most lofts or just in mine. When I was a kid, some of my friends and me discovered that we could take a roller and hold his wings back and flip it the same way it would go into the roll and it would go into a spin. Unfortunately they always hit the loft floor and we thought this to be a little cruel even for boys. It was facinating though.

Also, one time when I was a kid, I walked into my loft and saw this red and white cock rolling "sideways" on the floor. I only saw it once but still remember it happening.

I have also heard thuds in my stock loft before and went in to investigate the sound to see a bird on the floor looking as though it just rolled down! FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Stan, I have a few that do that, mainly cock birds. I only had one kill itself though, it rolled off the perch in an earthquake..lol.

Hey Stan,
The Hollywood,285 side of my family, rolls and flips in the stock loft often, but I have never had one hit the floor that I have seen,, They seam to fly off the perch and tumble once or twice, coming down or going up to there perch or breeding box.. I have always connected this trait in these birds to frequency,, just seams the birds that roll in the loft, produce a high percentage of frequent rollers.. I don't think I would want this trait in the loft, if they were hitting the floor and rolling down.. I would think this would be a sign of a control problem, but just a thought.. Mongrel lofts

I think that it's quite common. I've got cocks and hens that do a couple flips all the time and one hen that does hardcore rolls for up to 5'. And Yes, she hits the floor hard from time to time! I've been lucky so far because my loft has wire floors, but if she ever hits a floor joist she will be dead instantly! Her offspring are high velocity rollers and never got a rolldown from her yet. I guess some of them have a propensity to roll and just have to get it out of their system.
