Hi all. How do you get your pigeons to mate with the one you want it to mate with? This coming Spring I was hoping to change some pairs. How do you go about this? Our coop is about 10 by 10' with plastic bins nailed up on the wall for nest boxes for the eight birds we have.

Hey Roly;
The best way is to separate the hens and cocks till spring.
Make a temporary partition in your loft
Then ,if you havent got the coop separated you can put them into a mating box.Or if your nests have front on them you can put them in the nest you want them in ,and lock them up till they are mated.They will mate right away,if they have been separated over the winter.

Roly,
I keep cocks and hens separated over the winter. When I want to change mates from the previous year I toss the ones I want to mate up into the breedeing area one pair at a time throughout the winter for about a week or so, rotating them through until they all appear to be mated up the way I wanted. In the spring I put them in the breeding area a pair or two at a time to lessen the chances of going back to old mates.

This is precisely why I will use a closed breeding system.
Seperate the sexes over the winter, give em a chance to bond once or twice, pop em in a box together and blammo!!! Eggs. no muss no fuss lol
This is one thing pigeons need no coaxing to do!!!
prolific little things!!!

Thanks for the advice! I see we should partition the bigger area into two for the winter and it might be useful when spring comes to have the ones we want to breed in one area and the ones who can fly in the other. We were so worried that our favorites RolyPoly and Roundabout will fly and disappear that we haven't let any of them fly yet on purpose. I want those two to mate and their mates to mate just for a change of pace. Thanks again.

Roly .
One other word of advice, If you have already designated a pair as breeders and intend to use them as a base for you "family".Do not fly them. period.
I have heard too many stories about breeders pairs getting lost or hit.
Best advice I ever heard.
good luck
