Tony,
Today someone from another site asked me where could kids go to get their roller questions answered. I suggested this site. Then I realized that they would have to pay the 10$ fee to post, and that this would be a deterrant.

I know that they could do a search for free, but that might not answer their question. What should I advise them to do?

I was also thinking that you would have to screen them somehow or you might get a lot of "counterfeit" kids trying to post for free.

Paul, first off, thanks for the referral! I have given free membership away to certain individuals, have them call me. I will make my decision. Let me also add, I see no reason why a parent would not provide a membership as it is only a modest fee to participate in an activity that would provide hours of valuable learning and some minimal fun at the same time. Ultimately, I would prefer a parent to give their approval to their child participation by paying for his/her membership.

PS Does the NBRC give free memberships away to kids? Do NBRC members provide scholarships to kids? I would be willing to follow the lead of the national club if someone can fill me in. Thanks!

I agree Tony,
I will let the person who asked me to check out your site (in fact I already have) and she can let the kids she was talking about know.

Just a thought. I would suggest that if we are going to have junior members, maybe we consider having a junior member section or some way to identify them as junior members. I would hate to see one of them ask a question that has been beat to death and someone rudely telling them to do a site search. It's not like this hasn't happened in the past.

NBRC Region 5 has scholarship funds upon request that would cover this cost; the cost of a NBRC membership; and fees for flying in kit competition.

Tony,
Interesting question about the NBRC. I tried to promote a family membership last year. I feel that the future of our hobby comes from kids learning to like birds. They will come back to them when they get into their own houses. I do not think that kids should necessarily have a vote in the NBRC, and I at least do not need two journals sent to the same address.
From what I could learn the idea died because people were afraid that there would be cheating in the number of kits entered in the NCF. Kind of seems that we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

There is a couple problems here,# 1..there will be 10 or 15 different answers given on the same question,,,and half will be questionable...?..this site tends to lean to competition,so some answers wont fit too well, there is a natural aggressive attitude in some that answer these posts....even if its about bugs,,,LEO

Leo & 0221,
I believe you both understood what I was getting at in my above post. I fully support the idea that the young people of today are the future of our sport. Having said that, some on this Forum will need to sit back and think about what they are posting before they hit the post button. Read through some of the current and past posts and you will quickly see what I am talking about.

-fou, It's conception with one owner makes it totally private. We are guests who are required to behave and follow the rules and subject to expulsion for bad behavior, seems private to me. :)

Take care my friend
