Yesterday I spoke to Mr Bruce, the man who gave me birds. In the course of our conversation I asked him about a local club / flys. He said there was no local roller club and didn`t seem to excited when I mentioned the local all breeds club. This club is the only local pigeon club.
When I mentioned a fly he was more enthusiastic, saying that three kits of 15 birds were needed to have a fly. He was looking at next summer for a fly, and he was sure that we could find another participant. From what I gathered he was going to seed enough birds to start a club. That would be a most uniqiue approach to the foundation of a local Roller Club.
This will also be interesting experiment in the concept of breeding and training. Since all of the birds will be from the same line, maybe not the same grade of roller, I feel a certain parity will be established. It will be interesting to say the least.
I have arranged to visit his operation tomorrow , weather permitting watch his kit,and to pick out breeders for the beginning of my fledgling roller operation. His birds are from the Taylor-Cheney line. That would explain the behavior of the bird I have the hooks her roll upwards. In another correspondence I was told that Taylor birds sometimes exhibit this very same characteristic and fly very fast as well. With this bit of information I was able to realize some of the behaviors were family traits,ie fast flying. With my birds all being under six months and in the midst of the moult I can`t experiment with the ration yet. For now I will continue to fly and condition my birds.
If anyone knows anything about this particular line of birds I woud be more than happy to glean all of the information I can. I feel Mr. Bruce will be a fierce competitor ---------- redneckhippie*blue dot lofts*

Red this is how clubs are formed , good job!!! Yes I know a little about the Cheney/Taylor birds, in fact Eldon Cheney just called me last weekend and we talked pigeons for an hr or so, when Taylor got out of birds a few years ago Eldon got a few of his breeding pairs,Eldons own birds allready went back the same way and Don Hearns out of Calif were where many of these originated so I would imagine that Herb Sparks is up there also somewhere. These birds are what many out here consider old Penson blood with a heavy 514 influance. That if those are the same birds and not out crossed on other lines since leaving Cheney's hands. The fast flying is due to management I would assume and that swooping up and rolling has nothing to do with it.

Scott,
You said that flying fast is due to management, how do you slow them down? Is it the feed? would you elaborate...Thanks

Jay sorry that it took so long to answer this. Yes it's feed, there are two ways to slow them, one is Milo and one is wheat, my choice is wheat. Once my young birds start flying with bowed wings once they mature(strong) I then start slowing down their wing beat with wheat. This happens at about 5-6 mo old, What happens is that once they slow down they can really settle into doing some work. It takes about 4 days to slow them down. But what also happens is they start loosing wt. at first the roll will really sharpen up then it will start to deterate, so then you need to hit them with mix a couple of times a week also to maintain wt. and bring the qaulity back into the roll. Just gotta play around with it. You also need to pay attention to things such as Moult, cold ect. at these times I keep them on mix even though they get strong and fly fast and don't give me much work compared to what they are capable of. You also get more depth once you slow them down as they arent just beating ass to get back to the team. But keep in mind that this does not apply to too young of birds and they need what they need as far as protein, basicly you just reduce the protein at various time's and you cannot have your team on point at "all" time's.
