Hi Donnie my friend, sorry to hear you may have to lock your birds down! Those darn BOPs are sure a menace from what I have been reading from lots of persons on the site! I am blessed to not have that Bop problem here In Bermuda. Keep your chin up buddy!

That's not cool, maybe he was just snooping around and not targeting your birds. 3 days ago, when i went out to feed up my birds, there was a coopers hawk sitting on my lofts sundeck. it was beautiful yet sickening at the same time

Donnie, I had to lock down 2 weeks ago, coopers are eating anything that moves, they usually move in around October ,but came back early this year.
Seriously considering going to show birds, impossible to fly anymore!

Donny.. I think that it depends on what it is .. was it a RedTail ? man if locked down just because I "saw" a hawk I would never fly.. I have at least one redtail above my loft at all times with no problem.

If it got to a point where I had to lock down like some... or breed hundreds just to let them be slaughtered .. I would be searching for another breed.

Hey guys, is there not a way to unite all us Roller flyers here in the states, and take a petition of some sort to the powers that be, and let them know that the Hawk and Falcon populations are becoming over populated to the point that our native wild birds are in danger of being wiped out? And there needs to be some type of population management system put into effect for the Raptors. Its to the point now that we can hardly fly our birds without loseing some everytime we fly. These are not common pigeons, some people have paid hard earned money to purchase stock birds with pedigrees. There must be something we can at least try.

I had a Peregrine Falcon chase my 3rd round hatch for a few minuets tonight and luckily for them and me he went home hungry or he wasn't hungry at all and was just playing with them, but whatever that was the only the second time seeing a Peregrine in my neck of the woods. Dennis

Hi Dennis,
Soon my friend they will be every where! I live in the heart of downtown, and these things come in like a fighter squadron.

Donnie,
Is this BOP chasing your birds? Remember that young birds need to be flown. Constant lock down will retard their development. I fly under constant peregrine falcon pressure. I have tried many different things in order to stay in roller pigeons. In 2008 I locked down every time I had a peregrine attack hoping that they would find a primary source of food someplace else. End result was that I got very little fly time on my young birds. I got zero A-team level rollers that year. They just did not develop.
Not all BOP have birds as their primary prey. Buteos (Red Tail, Red-shouldered, Broad-winged) are primarily rodent/reptile eaters. They are the hawks that we see all of the time sitting along side of the roads. They can be deadly if your birds are spending a lot of time sitting in the trees around your house (management issue), but for the most part are not great at taking birds out of the air.
The point of locking down your birds is to break the cycle of them feeding on your birds. You do not want them to set up camp and look to you as their primary food source. Just because you saw a BOP seems a little quick on the trigger to me.

Fortunately, the BOP's aren't thick in my area this time of year and those that are seem to have found another food source. The couple of half hearted chases have actually been good training for the young bird kits. Hopefully it will prove beneficial come Fall. I have a Caracara(Mexican eagle) that comes by every evening and looks at the kit but nothing more. This bird helped train the young birds to fly a little higher.
