Does anyone do this anymore?

Where can I find info on it?

Alan, there is usually something about the portable lofts in the NBRC Bulletin. Just about every issue I think.

Allen why would you want to fly out of portables. I have never heard a good kit being flown from one. In fact I have heard just the opposite.

Ya know portables could serve a definite purpose. Not that I`m gonna run out and start a porta kit. I was thinking about educating the masses. Whenever I tell my friends about my bird flipping they do a double take.
The elementary school isn`t very far from here I have been contemplating releasing from the school yard after school.
I think this could be an invaluable tool to the promotion of this breed. Any parking lot is a potential presentation. So I would applaud those that are willing to go the extra mile in training their birds to do this.

I'd never use my best kit but it's like any other hobby. It's a challenge.

You can meet with a few rollers buddies all in one spot and each of you can fly your birds there. Or you can bring your "loft" to a friend's loft and fly them at his house.

Plus you can bring the roller to the general public. You can fly your birds almost anywhere, and let many people see them, exposing the roller to the masses. When you tell the average "Joe" on the street about a roller they don't believe you. But once they see it in person they are impressed.

The possibilities are endless.

It brings another dimension to the hobby I've always been interested in.

Thanks, I'll have to join the club and check the club bulletin.

Redneckhippie,

You may be able to give demonstrations to the schools as part of an extra circular activity. Most schools are always looking for something like that.

Convert them from Play Stations to rollers when they are young. You might even save some lives.

What about at zoos, parks etc?

You guys ever notice that when we have non-pigeon company over that thier amazment isn't so much with birds rolling but the fact that we can get them back home LOL. As for portables. Personally I think that they are cruel, To many things can keep em from making it home as it is only to die of starvation and dehydration or getting sliced and diced by a winged killer . Whenever I loose birds due to weather or being chased off I'm pissed at myself as these little guys sole survival depends on me knowing when "not" to open the door. But at least they have a chance of finding thier way back home when a problem arises. With portables they never know where they are and those that survive to fly out of a portable fly much differntly than out of a real loft. How can they ever settle down to work ? Plus you must keep them on the razor edge of starvation. It is a noble idea but not a realistic one, all it takes is one preditor that is relentless on the team to run them just far enough off to not have a clue where the box is.
