I have my first kit of rollers. Just getting started. I have some from this spring and they get younger from there. They kit really well but none seem to roll. A few try but no real spins. They are all young ones from pairs the guy i got them from. He told me what to breed and said they were good but now I wonder. Do I let them continue or do I look for other birds? Don

If they are all from this spring and younger I would give them more time. What do you have to lose by giving them until next spring to develope? Unless you breed through the winter you will not have anything to replace them with. If you have any degree of confidence in the birds you are breeding from, give these young birds time to develope. If you do not have confidence in your breeders you should start looking now for breeding stock for the spring. Either way there is no compelling reason to cull all the fliers now. Dan

Rotti they need more time, Dans Right you won't know what you have until Spring. I start breeding very early in the year and start seeing quite a bit of roll come June out of the early hatches. but Spring is when the creams rising to the top as so many before that either stiffen up, shorten up, fight the roll or just plane crash and burn. In other words I just don't get that excited about youngsters just cause they are rolling, but come Spring what is left is giving me a much better perspective of what they have or don't have. Scott

Ok I hold these birds over until next year. No problem. I'll watch and wait. It is just hard with the first kit. I want to have rollers and not tumblers. Everyone around here has had tumblers and called them rollers. I want to say see this is a roller. not a great one but one.So I wait. Don

Well, so much for waiting til next spring. Newbie mistake number god knows what. Don't fly your birds when short on time and hope someone else will continue to watch and lock them up when they are all in. Even if you ask them to and they say they will. They soon lose interest and you lose birds. Nine out of fifteen to be exact. nine killed by the damn cat. One more today by a rogue hawk. Five kit birds left for the year. Wow this isn't how it was supposed to be.I guess I get to start all over this spring. At least the feed bill will be smaller. Don

That sucks Don, it is a bad feeling looking into a kitbox that was full that is now near empty. First you need to deal with that cat. If it is your own "train" it. If it's a stray "deal with it". This sport is filled with highs and lows, lost kits, lost birds, birds killed, health issues you name it, You learn though and usually you learn the hard way. You just have to get up and dust yourself off and start again, only now you are bit smarter. Scott

Don,
Where are you located. I have 4 or 5 young birds that are young and unproven. 1 is tail riding...and the others are doing little flips here and there. They are from good bloodline. They are like 2-3 months old. But who knows what they will turn out like. You pay for the shipping and send me a box I will give them to you. E-mail me paulfullerton@sbcglobal.net if you are interested. If not that is cool. let me know either way.

Just a word of thanks to Paul and his friend Bill. The birds will be greatly apreciated. I just wanted people here to know that there are some out there willing to help someone else out just because. Thanks again. Don Also wanted to say thanks to Tony. Everytime I try to post and the screen "says sorry this site doesn't accept anonymous posts, you must sign in" I love it. What a great group of people that are here. Don

Hey Don, I agree, we do have a great group of people on the board! Since I went to the "must sign in" feature, I think the quality of posts and people have improved as well. Thanks! FLY ON! Tony Chavarria
