I have just got into Rollers on the west coast of Scotland, I have 3 late bred hens and one cock (which i plan to expand on soon) 2 of the late bred hens i have had for a few weeks and they have been flying ok. The other 2 arrived in the post last week so they are penned in at the moment. The 2 that are flying, if i keep them in all day and let them out in the evening (un fed), they have taken to flying up onto the roof of the house and only coming down for the food. They were flying for 30 minutes no problem before. Should i be feeding them in the morning before i go to work to take some of the hunger of them? They get a table spoon full of 4/5 wheat and 1/5 young bird mix in the evening

Hi Mac, You said your birds fly to the roof. Do they come straight back down to eat or do they set awhile? Maybe they need the feed increased to 2 tablespoons if they are to hungry. It might just be where a feed adjustment is needed. If not and they are lazy, box em up and take em down the street about 1/4 mile and make em fly. Later Steve

HI Mac. In a similar situation not long ago. I kept them in on a shorter ration for a couple of days and they were pretty good after that. When my birds leave the loft they have to perform to get fed, also meaning a trip thru the trap. You should shake the feed can or whistle at them when you feed them to get the pavlovian response. If they are on the roof you could shake the can at them and they should burn feathers gettin in the loft. They should always be hungry when released. good luck in your new endeavor. Thanks chaps, they go straight to the roof and wont move till I shake the can, then they do burn feathers making straight back to the loft. Since I posted the last message I’ve done a bid more reading and am going to worm them, this hasn’t been done since I got them, around 5 weeks ago. We are about to get 8s and 9s so I don’t think they will be flying for a few days. They are just getting used to the trap at the moment, I am trying to fly them and settle four new birds I got a week and a half ago. That’s another story!!
