I know the guy that runs a local grain elevator. I talked to him today and he said that I could have all the spilled grain that I wanted. I picked up some corn, wheat, sunflower seeds, soybeans and some millet today. I made a mixture and fed some to my birds a few minutes ago. I was wondering if soybeans are a good thing or not? I only took the good dry grain. I know bird seed is cheap, but this is cheaper. :)

Jeff,
I have heard that soybeans were very high in protien. I read that it is good to bake them before giving them to the birds. Just my 2 cents worth. Caleb

One question that I have is that you mentioned sunflower seeds. I do not know how good those are for pigeons. I have never heard of sunflower seeds being in any type of pigeon feed or mixed grain feed. I hope some of the old timers help out with your question.

Hi Jeff, I think you are talking about Peas instead of Soybean? There are acouple of different styles of Peas out there, the most common and cheapest on the pocket (not as cheap as yours tho :) is Canadian or Trappers peas. I have found the best peas and most liked peas (by the birds) to be Austrian Peas. I am almost 100% sure you are referring to Peas instead of Soybean. Flying them, Thor

No, Thor, these are soybeans. I've been looking for peas, though. Thanks for the advice. I've read that peas are a very good thing for pigeons.

Paul, I guess I always thought that sunflower seeds were a good thing. The pigeons seem to love them. Let me know if you hear different.

Jeff, your birds are eating the sunflower seeds whole? Hum, I guess they could like them, I fed a whole large order of grease french fries to a blue check park pigeon once. The sunflower seeds are probably a litte more nutritious though..lol. I would ration the soybeans as I believe they are really high in protein, probably way, way more than needed in a pigeon diet. By the way, wanna see something really cool, try giving your birds peanuts, perferably the crushed ones. They will inhale them, drawing blood to final crumb is eaten. Brian.

Thanks, Brian. No, they don't eat the sunflower seeds whole. I make my wife shell all of them for the pigeons. Kidding, of course!

Hi Jeff. I grow sunflowers in my yard. I feed my birds sunflower seed and they eat them right up. I put a chunk of one of the heads in the loft and they dig em out and eat them. I have found some hulls on the floor but for the most part they eat em whole. A local seed mill puts out a pigeon feed. It has all of the good stuff in it as well as sunflower seeds so... As far as the soybeans I have no clue other than they are high in protein. Any way be cool and good luck ---------- redneckhippie*blue dot lofts*

Jeff45, I have come across some info on the soybeans. Gord Chalmers DVM says " If you buy soybeans, be aware that they need to be cooked before they can be fed, or you can get into trouble with them. Raw soybeans contain several substances that interfere with digestion, and until they are cooked, they are not good for livestock including pigeons. Safflower is a good grain, but be aware that in the unhulled state, it is composed of about 30% fibre. This amount of fibre can easily interfere with the digestion of other important nutrients in the diet. Ideally for pigeons, the toyal amount of dietary fibre should not exceed 5%. A ration with, say 10% safflower, would result in 3% fibre from safflower alone, so go easy on the safflower". Those are his words, I hope that helps to answer your question. Jeff
