From reading previous posts I see that some of you guys feed layer pellets either alone or mixed with grain. Layer pellets are not recommended for chickens until they start to lay because the high calcium content required for egg production. Have any of you had any problems feeding it to your pigeons? Thanks.

Hey CCagle,
Some guys use the Purina Layena pellets for their stock birds during breeding season and report good results. Other guys wont touch the pellets because of runny poop and bad smell.

Hey all,

As far as pellets by themselves..they are runny...I have used pellets for my kit birds and my Breeders for since 05. I DONT use pellets for any other animal.

I use pigeon pellets Farmers 28%. For the breeders I cut them with 1 part wheat, 1 part milo and 1/2 part to 1 part sauflower. Kit birds is 5 parts 50/50 wheat and milo to 1-1.5 parts pellet.

I have NO problem with the smell or runny poop.

I have to agree that feed made for chickens is NOT the same as feed made for Pigeons...Just like feed for Milk Goats is not the same as feed for Milk Cows. Each animal has different needs and different mixtures. Just like when I hear about pigeons being fed game cock mix...again...different animal..some birds need more iron...more calcium...less fat...more fat...less carbs more carbs..etc etc.

I dont see a problem with throwing in some layer pellets during breeding season if you have had a problem with egg being crappy...but to be honest..use the feed for the bird that it is inteneded for. Feed companies dont mix feed just to mix it or lablel it just to label it...they are made for the needs of that animal.

You most likely will not see a negative affect in any short term...like the feed store is out of xyz and you use layer pellets or hog pellets or turkey pellets just to get by...but in the long term...it may not be good.

Carbs and protein are not created equal...it depends on what you get the protein from...like soy protein is different then animal protein...complex carbs are different then simple carbs....although they can all say % of protein or cabs...but the type is not the same.

Remember some grains or pellets have additions...like carbs and protein to promote fat and meat on the birds...but not the same time of meat for a flying breed....muscle fibers too are not created equal and the use of the animal is not created equal..they are made for the job at hand for the particular animal.

Anyway...a 16% pigeon is not the same as a 16% turkey...16& layer...16% hog....or a 16% Goat....the percentage may be the same but there are other things...look at the digestion of a Hog..one stomach like us....Cows..four stomachs....birds...crop and gizzard.....turkeys...for fat and meat....goats...for milk or market...cows...milk or market...chickens...Game cocks or farm rooster...very different but the same.

Nobody could tell you the long term affects on mucho calcium...but you can get calcium deposits in the bones and joints....although a bird may look just fine and healthy..but they cant talk....and tell you...I dont like to fly anymore because my joints have deposits and it hurts to fly...or I crashed on teh roll because my wings jacked me up...or the bird has to much iron and is weak from iron poisoning....

Just my two cents...people are free to do what they want...but although dog food would be just fine to a human..and alot cheaper.....but it is made for dogs.....same with cat food...made for cats...

Hey All, I use Chicken Egg Layer pellets and my birds DO NOT have the runs from them. If you want, I will show you pictures. If your birds have runny droppings, something is wrong...period.

Sorry to be on the other side here pigeon pellets are made for pigeons and chicken layer pellets are made for layer hens,Has anyone tried fish pellets for there pigeons wet. Just seems that animal feed is made for that specified animal and not to be switched within reason.Hell lets switch kitty litter for grit , looks the same.Dennis

I have talked about pellets for the past 5 years or better. I have fed pellets to my breeders and my flying birds. The main thing when you feed pellets they need very low salt and sodium content. The Triple trust 15% layer pellets I use have less than .20% salt/sodium. The extra salt and sodium makes them drink a ton more water. Which in turns makes their poop loose and runny. The droppings are like if they have been eating grain and no smell. The babies get bigger and stronger faster which in turn gets them in the kitbox quicker. I don't mix with grain just straight pellets. If I was going to find something that would make my birds sick or bad for them it would have shown up by now. Just my opinion. I show rabbits on a national level and have been in the top ten of the nation. And just rabbit food alone will not work for you.

Hey Brian,

I have noticed that my Farmers 28% pigeon pellet has less salt then when I first started using them. I think that many feed supply companies have heard the complaints of fanciers complaining about the runs and the smell. I think I noticed in 08 that the tag had a smaller amount of salt...and they changed the size of the pellet to a much smaller pellet. You are so right.

As long as you cut it with grain that is an easy fix. That is why I use the 28% so that I can still get the high % even when it is cut with Wheat and Milo...

I did measure water consumption and noticed a difference when the feed is cut. Anyway...ROCK ON!!!

Justed posted the article on pellets by the vet/racing fancier....interesting read....and shows how other feeds for other types of birds can be all off on what pigeons need....check it out....goes over some issues too caused by the wrong diet....issues in the long term that can affect the birds on the inside..things we cant see...and issue with offspring that we as roller fanicers could easly blame on a bad pairing of old stock....or sickness blamed on a plain old ....must have a bug in the loft....truth is..could be the feed.....

In animals....lots if things can happen in the long term and most fanciers blame it on poor selection...or base issues on ...well....for years I never had a problem and been feeding XYZ or even inbreeding..LOL....for XYZ years with no problem..somtimes it takes years for a problem to show its ugly head....man I wish birds could talk....then we would know when things are not good.

An animal is an animal...its the same for livestock too...I learned long ago the importance of feed and the right feed made just for a particular animal....I have heard the term...."Well Paul...these arent goats"....I say..yes but they are animals and feeding and breeding principles are the same across the board...if it is a goat...hamster or even a pigeon...

Why do you all think I caught on to this pigeon thing so quick..I used my livestock principals...if you can breed a Champion animal in a specific breed...you can breed a champion animal in any breed...because it is the same across the board.

Paul

I still dont believe that pellets of high quality made for pigeons would cause runny poop and smell..again..I have fed pure pellets and cut pellets and not a problem...it had to be something else.

Winners Cup, makes a 28% protein pellet. It is very small in size and looks easy for the birds to eat.
Has anyone tried this pellet before? and if so how were they?

I use only the Royal 22% pigeon pellets for my breeders, and yes they drink a lot of water and poop a lot, but the pairs and the babies are healthy. I have been playing around with feeding my kit birds 50/50 Nutrena 16% layer pellets and 12% Leach grains. The birds started to get a bit strong so I switched to 50/50 Wheat & milo mix with the pellets. I fly my birds almost every day and have been seeing my best roll since switching to this. I have also seen more depth in my younger birds. I have used Pauls 3 day system with some success, but I like to fly my birds more often.

The Layer pellets have 10% more ash, 2% more sodium and 4% more calcium than the pigeon pellets. Other than that they are virtually the same.

How much are we paying for the Purina Green pellets? If I can get it for less than $17 per bag I believe I will change over.

Hi Nick, I paid $28.00 for a 50.lb bag, I am only breeding from 3 pair so, its not too bad for me. The cost of the pigeon pellets is secondary to the health of my birds.
