I also built a kit box for when I do start a kit. If I get some youngster yet this fall to use to start a kit, do I leave them in the kit box all winter? I'm sure there will be a lot of consecutive days that they won't be flown due to the wind and cold here in SD. How long can you leave them locked in the kit box? Should I build a little fly pen so if there is a stretch of bad weather they can at least go out side?
I know that I'm supposed to feed the kit birds once a day. I heard that I'm supposed to give them only a tablespoon per bird per day. Is this right?
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, for winter season you probably need fly pen(s) in breeding loft as well as in kit box so birds can get exercise and get sun while they are locked.
If you planning to fly them during all winter then fly pen is not necessary for kit box
For me because of short winter days I could not fly or some time I just do not want to fly because of falcon/hawks. I let them go out over the weekend but because of 5 days locked-up there is not much performance and they do not see fit for flying.
On extreme winter days you will notice they will be sitting in fly pen and getting sun light. It looks really good as when I see my birds on extreme cold days sitting quietly in fly pen and getting sun
You would need to give more feed during winter season so they can generate more body heat to fight against cold. I would go for 2 tablespoons per birds but if it is really cold then go with 2 1/2 tablespoon. If you add corn to your feed then even 1 1/2 will do the job
If you able to fly them every day or every other day during winter you will see good performance and I noticed they love fly in winter season. Summer heat bother them more as compare to cold winter season.
