I am just wondering if I make feed available to breeders all the time would they get fat. Read some where that pigeons are like human beings in many ways, so for example in human beings if father and mother are fat then this thing can also be seen in up coming generation not 100% but most likely...so for good healthly and in good shape next generation pigeons would we feed breeders with care.
Another example of same is two big pigeons always produce big piegons
Thanks, -Rauf

Hi Rauf, Since no one answered this post, I'll see if I can give you my input... I believe you got your theroy all backwards here.(grin) The reason why some fanciers don't leave feed in the breeding loft all the time is because once the birds get their fill, they tend to waste alot of undesirable grains. If your breeders are the picky type, they tend to waste alot! Altho this pactice is done by mostly the guys with time... most fanciers don't have time and will simply just leave feed 24/7 for their breeders. Nothing wrong either way but if you have the time, then simply leaving enough feed until the birds get their fill and removing it completely is the best way to save money on the feed bill. On the breeders getting fat part... I'm not sure about your breeders but mines when raising their rounds... will loose alot of weight. This is mainly due to the stress of breeding and raising of the youngs. Most of the feed they take in goes right back out to their youngsters. Maybe it's just mines that doesn't grain weight... instead loses weight? About stocking a FAT roller. I don't think this is ever possible unless you simply stocked it right off of the nest without testing it in the air. Why I say this is because FAT birds tend to be lazy, hence will not take flight on command. When uplifted, they tend to be sloppy in their performance if at all. Most likely these birds are the first to be 'culled'. Just think about it, we are looking for those individual that excells as athletes in the air. If anyone is stocking a FAT roller, he or she must of seen something I haven't. So, I don't believe a FAT roller would get so lucky as to penetrate the breeding loft. Altho once stocked... take my birds for example... most do blow up in size. This is normal in most family, especially mine. I think the colder your area, the bigger your birds will blow up. As they say, smart animals will adapt. Hope this gives you something to think about, Thor

Thor, it makes scenes to me what you saying. I did not either see birds gaining wait while breeding.
What you think about breeding from big pigeons? Why people would not prefer to breed from big rollers…is because they will not perform? and offspring will be big as well? or Because as being bigger pigeon the younsters will be same? since I think stronger and healthy will domi.

I have always kept food at all times in my breeding cage. The reason I do it is because of work, etc. If I didn't work I would still do the same. If you use a schedule to feed, it will save you money on the feed bill but I do not thing it makes a difference as far as pigeons getting fat. When pigeons have food all the time at their disposal, generally they don't eat a lot of it (unlike other species like humans...LOL). Kit birds on the other hand, because they are usually kept hungry do pack themselves plenty. This is due to the fact that the feed is not always available for them.
Why do people dislike breeding from bigger birds? Hmmm .. I have seen big or small alike roll very well. A smaller birds feels better in the hand I suppose and in most cases looks better in many fanciers eyes. There is also a pre-conceived notion that smaller birds roll faster. I personally do not think that is true. It may very well just be an illusion that they don't take into consideration. My personal preference is small to medium. ---------- AD3 Online Loft @ http://ad3rollers.no-ip.com
