I have seen heterozygous indigo and homozygous indigo on blue pigeons but what if anything does indigo do to an ash red bird? I have never found anything about it in the few genetic books I have. Dan

Dan,
Indigo doesn't do much to Ash Red. There is a picture of Ash Red Indigo on the color chart of my website, www.slobberknockerlofts.com. Kind of makes the Red not as attractive in my opinion. Bob

Dan, indigo is what they call a partial dominant. Dominant in that it isn't sex-linked or recessive, you can get it on either sex of a mating, as long as you have one in the parent pair. Indigo can't be carried like say recessive red or dilute, it has to be visually present for it to be there. The partial part is that it has to have an escort if you will, it piggy-backs on other colors and shows simulaneously, those colors of course being ash red, blue or brown as other variations are the combination of the base, indigo and whatever other factor is present. Indigo has to have a base otherwise it can't be seen because it is not there, or in other words, the base color plus the indigo gene create the indigo expression. Indigo bars as most folks know them are nothing but the indigo gene on a blue bar. Indigo on a red bar can like Bob said, kind of wash them out, or I have also seen it turn the red parts of the ash red very deep in color. Most of the time, even if you know the parents, you can't tell if the bird is indigo over ash red or just an ash red. But bred that offspring to a blue based bird and chances are good you will find out. A homozygous indigo bar often looks just like an ash red bar. Ever seen indigo on a brown bar? Really cool! But indigo on a spread brown is like the bottom of a nasty spitoon. LOL. Brian.

Thanks for the info, guys. I have a few indigo bars in my kit that really spin! I have very little ash red so these indigos add a little of the reddish color to my kits. They are young birds from this year and I will be watching them closely to see if they continue to spin and kit well. Dan
