First, don't worry if your birds have lice, it won't kill them, just make their feathers look like someone shot them with a shotgun..lol. Mites will do the same thing. Lice are the long dark things you'll see in the feather vanes. Mites congregate near the shaft and are much smaller. Total prevention is impossible during the summer months, but can be controlled using a variety of products. Permectrin II, Ivomectrin, Sevin-dust, Borax soap, Purge spray, the lists is pretty endless including a variety of natural stuff individuals have found to work. I prefer Permectrin II and Ivomec (sheep drench) in the bath water. Give them a bath a few times a month and you'll have the majority of the problem under control. One thing to mention is that lice and mites are attracted to white feathers first and even if you treat them routinely, some of the birds with white flights and tails will still occasionally have a lice or two. Go to Jedds, Foys or Global's web sites and search through their products for pest control. Brian.

I just checked out my birds and they seem to be lice free right now. I check them periodically. Here is what I do. I use Permectrin powder, it is a livestock lice powder. My breeder loft is wire floor and has trays underneath to pull out for cleaning. When I clean the trays I sprinkle the powder all over the trays. I also sprinkle the powder in the nest boxes of the babies when they are just feathering. I also sprinkle the powder every now and then on the perches. If I find a bird with lice...I will put the powder in my hand and rub the bird down...then give the bird a toss and the excess powder poofs off. I also use a bath powder in there bath, it rids the birds of lice too. This works for me. But like the last post stated...the list is endless. I really noticed the difference when I started putting the powder in the nest boxes. The bath powder in the bath seemed to work good too. I got the bath powder from Foy's...it is there brand of bath powder.

All,
I was at another site while back and read something that could be of interest to you all to keep lice and mites out of your loft. Get a woman stocking (pantyhose) and fill the toes with savin dust (That is about a cup or two) and at about the knee part knot it. Then using 16D nail hammer it through the knot in the center of the loft hanging from the ceiling. The waight of the dust will strech the stocking. When the birds fly around and about, they cause the dust to spread around the loft and themselves. This way you have the birds and the loft dusted at all times. It is good all year long and especialy in the winter time when you can not give the birds baths. I hope this could be of help to all. Thanks.

I use 7 Dust in the nest, and spray the perches and all cracks and crevices with Permectrin II. Seems to work for me.
