Welcome CCagle, I would recommend that you not use V perches. They are hard to clean, take up space and are hard to make. I spent my first winter hand making sixty V style perches, I use two to prop up my entrance doors in the kit box. There are several styles to choose from that work better. Just do a search and you can select the ones you like best. If it's a V style perch then, 8 to 12 inches apart and at least 8 inches from the top of the lowest to the bottom of the perch above.
Again, welcome, I hope you enjoy the site, take a little salt with everything and most especially if it comes from an oldfart! :)

welcome CCagle, you will learn alot in this site and a lot of different opinions.. I myself like the V perches,I think they are better for me,easy to scrap and keeps the poop off the bottom birds ,I have the box type also and they are always pooping on one another.I keep my V perches 4 inches apart and 8-9 inches from the top to the bottom, like i said alot of ideas to choose from..good luck

Hi Rick, I was talking about the distance between the top of the perch, you I think mean the bottom of the side of the perch. It would work out about the same.

Take care

Thanks for your advice. What type of perches do you use oldfart?

I prefer V perches in my kit box. It does keep the birds cleaner. Mine are spaced 8 in from peak of one to the peak of the next below it and 9 in from peak to peak right-left. The 'wings' of each perch nearly (1/2 in) touch each other. They are made from a cedar fence board, 5 3/4 in wide X 5/8 in thick. They are simple to make and inexpensive.

CCagle, I use a perch that is cut from a 2x4". They are beveled on both ends to a 45degree slope. I get 11 out of an 8' 2x4". Super easy to make, cheap and easy to clean. The birds are forced to sit on them side ways and most of the poop hits the slope and drops off into the sand filled catch box. Just do a search for oldfart kit box and you can see exactly what I am describing.

I prefer v perches. They are easier to clean. If you get the feed right and they have a nice poop it rolls right off. It promotes an certain openess to the kitbox that boxes cant.
The spacing depends on how much room you have. I would think a minimum of 4" from the point on the wing length and a half inch between the wings is sufficient for the poop to drop between the perches.
I cut one end on a 45 and then butted the other piece into the beveled side to form a flat spot on top for the birds to sit on.
Mine are about 9" apart peak to peak, side to side. This is sufficient to keep the birds from fighting.
