Hey All, Thanks!

Pogo, I thought to give it a try. low or no maintenance was my primary reason. I set the outside up so I can change it to hardware cloth if I want.

SD, thank you brother.

Joe. Dennis, thank you my friends.

Take care my friends

It looks good, I hope you like it, and it works like you want. I want to build a enclosed kit box that I can stand in, handle pigeans with out worrying about them geting away. Your design allows that.

RT, I have two old cock's that have been prisoners in the stock loft. Without taping their wings I could not take the chance something could happen and they might be accidentally released. I plan on using the second section for flying old cock's and now with the double door setup I can allow the two some fresh air. I will just have to confine them on release. I am thinking on a small temporary holding box they can be placed in when I release the flying birds and then opened after all is secure. I won't bring them out at first but later after I give everything a working trial.

Take care my friend

Thom, Very nice.. The ventilation will be good on those hot days. It will be interesting to see how your birds react to the landing board...lol. You'll have to keep us informed. Keep the birds real hungry before letting them out of the new box.. I just built 3 new ones and one of the young kits were a little hesitant on going in, but they finally did. The other two trapped right away. How are those Ruby's doing. I raised about 20 this year, I stocked a couple from last year, last week. Enjoy!!

Hey M.J., The good part is they are all trapped trained to the kit box next to the new box. I'm interested to see how they handle the new landing board also. I raised 35 Ruby's and ten Jacconette's this year. I'm flying them together but divided by sex. A few of the earliest are starting to do more then just flip, even spin, not deep but they are very young. I'm looking forward to the proof of the pudding, this year will show me where I am in my program. I still have and will keep my foundation Ruby's but I did not breed from them this year. Mine are stand alone now, thirty five from four pair of breeders, all father and daughter matings, all picked for their performance in the air.

Dave, as soon as I can I will get the birds in the box! :)

Hey Ty, I got sidetracked. :) I'm enclosing the yard with a fence for our weimaraner. My wife is hunt training him and wants to work with him off leash. I agreed to work on her fence and she is going to paint my loft. I got the better of the deal, but don't tell her, she thinks she got one over on me. :) I hope to have it ready for the birds by next weekend. I will post up a few pictures of the finished project.

Thanks for asking and take care my friend

Hey polarbear, I have one side ready for the paint. Perches are in, fence is up! :) I will send a few pictures tomorrow. Take notice the fence is up, but my box still needs paint. In her defence, it's been hot or raining. I keep telling my breeders, soon but I think they no longer believe me. :(

Thanks for asking, Take care my friend

sweet! i like the plastic mesh, i'm sure it will work just fine. plus, its dark, and that helps it disappear when viewing the birds.

Perches for the first section are in, room for thirty without crowding. I still need to make the doors and the panels for the outside. After work it is ether tooo hot or raining! Doors, panels and paint are next. I will include a picture of the fence, but notice my loft still needs paint! :) I have ever confidence, she will get it done!

Hey Steve, You are right about the color making it easier to see the birds. I also like that it is no maintenance. I was worried that it was not strong enough but even if it was wire, it would not keep a thief out. Me and my trusty 12 and the fact that all of the neighborhood walk-bys think I'm crazy does not hurt. Little do they know just how right they are! :)

Paul, Water seeks it's own level! :) You are as methodical and O.C.D. as I am and it's been that way your entire life, so don't blame it on retirement! :) They say "It takes one to know one"! In truth, that's just one of the reasons I like you! :)

tom great job can you do me a favour and let us know down the road what diff if any you notice between the diff kit box sizes.i have a debate with my dad who claims the english style or system(large tall flight coop) is beter for the youngsters as opposed to keeping them and flying them out of small kitboxes

Hey John, I will be glad to but I tend to agree with your dad. I had a box in the early seventy's simular to the one I'm building now and I liked it very much. Now I will have a small kit box alongside the tall kit box so I can make a subjective comparison.

I hope you have been well, my friend

Very NICE kit box Thom I like the bigger kit boxes also give young more room. I also have larger ones in side of loft mine are 4'wx3'dx5't but only have 24 perches in each of the 3. Will have to build 2 more when I get home from vacation.

Hey All, I keep a thermometer In my kit box. I like to know what my birds go through everyday. Today it was 101 degrees at three o'clock. I moved the thermometer into my new kit box just to see any difference, It dropped twelve degrees to 89 and I have some plastic stapled to the end to keep rain out during construction, so I think that would be even lower when the box is finished. Over the weekend, I hope to get the outside painted and the window solid panels and their rack finished. I can not hardly wait to bring my breeders out for some fresh air and sun.

Sammy, "We don't need no stinking badges"! or blueprints but I can explain in detail how to make it! :) I have found that painted perches are a pain to clean, but you can always change them later! :)

Take care, All

Hey all, My lovely lady has decided she wants to raise pheasants for the table, the eggs and to train her gun dog. So..... This is why I have not finished my kit box. :) I'm almost finished with the pheasant pen. Each end has a section that can be divided with slide in walls to form a brood section with 2'x2' individual nesting sections. It "could" be divided into four seperate sections 4'wide x 4'high x 2' deep, just enough room for four young birds kits. :) Well, you just never know! :)

All I have left for the summer, is the Ondura roof and two more doors for the front. To get ready for winter, I will make wood panels that in close the entire structure or any part as needed.

Hey Raul, I did not know what work was until I retired! Well, maybe a little. :) Work keeps me young! Sixty three going on forty!

Joe, Thank you! I don't see the need for anymore kit boxes but just in case! :) I like the pheasants also, so they stand a good chance. I have a teacher that has asked for eggs to raise for her forth grade glass. she has raised chickens in the past as a class project but pheasants might be a little more interesting.

Hey All, I have the first side of the box finished and the birds are in. I never thought I would be glad to see pigeon crap on the box, but! :)

The first picture is of a hole in the plastic poultry wire. Some four legged critter, most likely a coon tried to get in the first night. I will close it up at night until I can replace the plastic with 1/2" hardware cloth.

The second picture is with the night and winter security panels in place.

The third picture is the cocks at chow time.

It needs a second coat of paint and little trim, then it is finished.

Thom, since you're the ondura expert here, have you ever seen a ridge with ondura? i'm starting my breeding loft, and want to use ondura for the roof. the roof will require a ridge vent, since its a peaked roof. i just can't stop thinking about the great venting i'll get versus a conventional shingle roof. i was thinking i could use ondura for the sides as well, but not sure about this. Tony C has a type of siding on his lofts that looks promising, but pricey i would imagine.

Hey Steve, The Ondura is self venting if you install it without the foam filler strips. My new kit has a space available for additional venting if needed but judging by the old box it will be unnecessary. To answer your question, I don't think any of the roof vents I have experience with are high enough to allow the Ondura to fit under. However, I do not see why you could not fabricate your own peak vent that would do the job. Consider a roof vent of wood and wrapped with aluminum rolled stock or it could be simply painted. It would require a table saw to manufacture but if you do not have one, I'm sure you could contract a local cabinet shop to produce it for you.

after visiting the ondura website, they have a ridge that fits over the panels. it doesn't get any easier. what do you think about using ondura for the side panels instead of conventional plywood?

Steve, When the Ondura gets hot it is easy to dent and scar. If I was building it I would go with plywood or O.S.B. and vinyl siding.

thanx Thom, i would never have thought of that. will stick to using it for the roof. they even have two kinds of foam filler, one thats got holes in it for ventilation, the other is solid. sweet!
