I have 2 young rollers...about 4 months old. They started doing some nice rolls about 2 weeks ago. 20' with speed and great form. They were rolling pretty frequent. Then I rested them for about 2 days because I was out of town. I have been flying them everyday since..which was about 4 days ago. They have cooled off. They hardly roll at all....just a break here and there. I have not changed the feed ....I did cut back becuase the were hanging out to long and would not trap...but I cut back just a little...about one table spoon of feed and that was it. Now they trap fine. Is this normal for young birds that just started hittting some good rolls. The 2 rollers are flying with 7 other birds that are coming into the roll too. young kit of birds. Any suggestions would be nice. Oh, the cut in feed did not affect there fly time that much maybe a couple of minutes..they fly anywhere from 30 to 45 min depending on the heat. They are flying good...everything looks good from that perspective. They set up for the roll and then kind of half ass it.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul:
What I have noticed in rollers is (and this may be true for many if not all families or lines) that many will go through phases of performance. I have one bird at present that I was very exited about. It was "coming in" very nice at about 15 feet, fast. Then for two weeks it stopped and would mearly tail set or tail ride and clap. Now it has begun to roll again rolling about 5 feet, fast. The cause of this is unclear. Many things could have caused this to occur. Perhaps the moult makes it unconfortable or weak and one should observe that young birds are always shedding feathers. Perhaps flying them with younger birds causes them to mimic the young and cease rolling momentarily. Young birds go through so many changes physically and mentally so I would not blame them when they momentarily go through certain bad habits as long as they are not permanent or last too long. You should not be alarmed but keep a close eye on them. :o)
