Blue and Ash Red are/were the basic colors. Basic patterns are bar, check, and t-pattern. Modifiers or genes such as Spread, recessive red, grizzle, bronze, piebald and dilute will only modify or cover the basic colors which are Blue and Ash Red. I believe this should apply to all the early Pensoms until the hybrid crosses for color came about.
Somebody correct me if am wrong.

To answer your original question, white bars are from Opal breeding in most cases. To answer where they came from would be to answer where pigeons came from. As far as how rare, they aren't that rare and could be bred by optaining opals and crossing with bars. I would say they are more unusual than rare. Most flying roller breeders could care less about color, so in flying lofts you most likely wouldn't see them. Hope this helps.

thanks pigeonohio for the info.I dont know much about rollers genetics. I wonder why most flyers think bars and dark birds are better than the other colors.I think the bars are wild rats that got mixed with rollers.lol guys dont have a heart attack now

Ouch! Wild rats ... LOL Someone once said "The closer you get to wild type, the closer you get to the heart of the roll".
I've seen birds in all colors perform well. Of course, unusual colors means you won't see them in many lofts and therefore you won't see them perform as much as the darker ones. Dark birds are as beautiful though as the "unusual" colors. The fact that they are of "unusual" or odd coloring makes them attractive. I've heard faciers who breed all reds or spangles from one pair and if they get a dark color like a check or blue bar they go nuts over it ... like they just bred the messiah itself. The point is, that dark color was rare from that pair making it extremely attractive to the breeder. To see a beautiful dark check with a touch of bronze in it, perfect type with bright yellow eyes or pearl. The icing on the cake ... it rolls 30+ feet and looks though its going at the speed of light. Now that is a beautiful bird! Your thoughts. ---------- AD3 Online Loft @ http://ad3rollers.no-ip.com

I bought my birds from Danny Horner ( a very good and honest man). One of the birds he sent me was a black with W/F/T and grizzeled head and has white bars. She is an excellent 30' roller and keeps on tumbling as she flys with the kit untill she rolls again and again. Another bird he sent me was a dark check/black (Indigo) with a touch of bronze and brown/bronze bars with the pearl eyes. He still need to show his true performance.

Siddiqir,
It is his own strain. Everybody call his birds the Horner birds. The original strain is Richard Jaconette and Smith. He is a very honest and a man with intigrity. His prices are very reasonable and his birds are excellent kitters and they can roll. In top of all that are very pretty birds. I recommend his birds to anybody since I was very happy of what I got. Good Luck!

Jay, so as not to confuse anyone who might be looking at getting some birds from Danny, he does not have toy stencil in his birds, which is the genetic term used for the combination of genes which is the only way to get white bars on a black bird. I suspect what you have is a black white flight mottle which has white feathers in the area where a bar would be. He has a lot of grizzles, odd sides and mottles. I have some of Danny's birds as well, had them for years. I talk to him every few months just to shoot the bull and he is not one to dabble with unique colors. In fact he doesn't even like the common recessive red..lol. He has a very good family of rollers and you can't beat his prices either. Brian.

Brian, It is possible that the white bars are due to being mottle. I never had a bird with white bars before and this bird gives the appearance to have them. I agree with you that Danny does not play with colors and he only breeds best to best for optemizing performance. You can see that in his birds. He has been a breeder and work with his family of birds since 1979.
