To all the Members,
To begin with my introduction it is an honour and a privilege to be a part of this wonderful forum and I thank Tony for allowing me to participate. My name is Raul Carreiro, I am Portuguese and I live in Bermuda. I will be 46 years old on September 3. My parents migrated to Bermuda in 1967 when I was 3 years old. I am married to a wonderful wife and we have 2 children Chris and Chelsea. I have raised pigeons of one kind or another for as long as I can remember, mainly show birds. Norwich Croppers were my cup of tea back in my early teens until the inevitable happened “Girls”. Although I still had interest in my birds they were not my priority LOL, I am certain you know what I mean!
About six years ago I became interested in the Birmingham Rollers so I began to look around locally for some stock. After a few months I purchased 4 pairs from a breeder and began to breed from them. After a few years with these birds which incidentally I could never get to roll for more than 2-8 feet, I decided to do some research on Birrmingham Rollers on the Internet and bang it hit me square in the face. I knew absolutely nothing about the sport! No wonder I could not get them to fly or roll properly I was doing everything wrong. From feeding, training you name it if the methods were wrong I was doing it! I decided there and then to learn as much as I could through club websites, articles etc and then it was time to get myself some good stock for a fresh beginning. I sent emails to different breeders on the possibility of acquiring some birds with no success. A good friend of mine Michael Baxter new of my efforts to try and get some good birds to no avail so he called me one night about him reading about Tony's Ruby strain and that they were an excellent start for someone like me and that many have spoken of Tony's Integrity to the breed and his fellow enthusiasts Well I did not know at the time who this person was so I e-mailed him up one night and explained to him that I was from Bermuda and I was Interested in acquiring some good birds and If he could help me with my venture. Well he explained to me that he would love to help me with stock but that he did not have an exporter to ship them to me. Well as faith would have It
I knew of someone who would work with Tony and have the birds shipped to me. I now have that feeling you got when you were a child and you are about to open you gifts on Christmas day, I just cant wait to see them! My gratitude and thanks to Tony for helping a novice cannot be over emphasized! It is through persons like him and I am sure others that our hobby will continue to grow! Thanks again for your help in starting me off right in this a challenging sport! I will have many great experiences with the best breed in the world! Thanks also to all members.
Sincerely,
Raul Carreiro.

Thanks all for your kind welcome, I am sure I will learn much on this forum. I have been reading many posts and the wealth of knowledge here is bottomless. Thom I have read some of your posts so pardon the expression but I see that you are a wise oldfart. By this I mean that you have taken a strain of good birds and you are now breeding from what you consider the best Pair. To me my friend that's what I believe Its all about learning, progressing, adjusting but most of all having fun! After all what better way to spend your free time lol! I have not received my birds from Tony yet but I am sure I will be elated.
Take care and all the best,
Raul.

Raul, Thank you for the compliment! I'll share this hard learned lesson and perhaps you will change your mind. I like to think of myself as tenacious (my wife says, "I'm mule headed"! We are both partly correct! :) My tenacity cost me the best bird I have raised to date. A Red Check cock that just whirred when he spun. He was multi depth, twice a minute, shot back to the kit like a rocket, style? I can't say, I could never see any wings, just a blur. I knew in my heart to stop flying him but I just could not. Each day I would think, "O.K., one last time then I'll lock him up". I pushed my luck one time to many and lost him to a Cooper hen. A stupid thing to do, BUT I have his father! This year I bred him to his best daughter. From the pair that bred the Red Check, I had seven, two were lost to the hawk, I culled one for tree sitting and the other four were and are keepers. I guess my point is, "I lost the bird and that was stupid but I would fly him in a heart beat tomorrow"! because that's what it's really about. :)
Raul, if you would like to talk pigeons or Ruby's feel free to email me at flycontroline@yahoo.com

Take care
Thom

Hi Thom, mule headed? that's a good thing! To me that Means that you are are not a flip flopper but someone who is stead fast in his decision making! We are in a recession today because of persons ( bankers/thieves/profit mongers and politicians who love to shake hands in order to get your vote! )who with out regard to the consequences of their decisions have left us the poor tax payer footing the bill for their lavish life style and squandering of humanity!)I have only once seen a bird that I had really rip up the sky and man what a rush! I think it was a one time wonder, for I lost that bird through my ignorance but It was I who paid for the mistake And I can tell you that bird never failed to amaze me. Only through our mistakes can we learn, and only through learning we make mistakes! I would love to talk Pigeons/Rubys with you so I will get in touch with you soon.
Regards,
Raul.

Hi Raul, welcome. I have a question, do you have BOP's on Bermuda?

Hi John, thank you for your welcome. No we do not have a BOP problem here in Bermuda. We can fly our birds at any time of year. There are a couple of kites/hawks here but they tend to leave the pigeons alone for the most part as they are small Bop. I understand that Bops are a big problem for you guys?
Regards,
Raul.
