Last year I bought small easter baskets, i put an inch of dirt in the bottom. The birds really like them. The other good thing is they are tall enough that I can take the young out of nest at about 15 days and they can not pester the parents to bad so they relay nicely.

Donny aka DJ,When you say bucket are you talking about a metal type and if so are the edges sharp! I too used the paper ones for years. But now i just wash out the dog bowls and reuse. so far it seems to work OK. Now MR. Williams did you say easter baskets and dirt,That's a new twist. are there bugs in the dirt and do the babies poop inside the basket. Are did you fill the basket high enough with dirt so that they can poop over the edge.

HI JT I also use large dog bowls but I use sand in a coffee filter in bowl and pine needles- I think they hatch about a day earlier each time. Don't have holes in bottoms of bowls. I also clean them while young are about 14 days old keeps nest boxes cleaner.

G johnnie the coffee filter, what is the reason for that . is it easier to clean, easier to lift the poop out.If so it makes sense.

I have used paper nest bowl, plastic, and clay, and i decided to use clay. I kept having to replace the paper nest bowl because it gets torn and so on. So I started using the plastic. Overall pretty good but my birds kept on moving it around in the pens so I went and got the clay. It's has more weight to it so it won't tip ova and the birds are unable to move it around.I dont think the holes in them make a difference. My nestbowl has no holes and it works fine.

The coffe fliter serves a double purpose. It lines the bottom of the bowl and provides grip for the chicks of slack nest builders

Easter Baskets:
I was looking for nest bowls last year when I found easter baskets for sell at the doller store. They are small baskets. I line them with newspaper, and put an inch of dirt, and then some wood chips (nest stuff). The birds really like them. I have the oblong shaped baskets.
The dirt is for weight as much as anything. When the birds stand on the edges they tip them over with out the dirt. I started by using dirt from my yard, but think that cleaned playground sand would be nice and keep parasites down.
After the babies are weaned I pull the newspaper lining and start over.
I have a few cock birds that build nest higher than the edges of the baskets. The young easily poop oustside the nest o these the others take a little more work. I have learned which Cocks are do what, and add more dirt to the less energentic nest builders to get he same result.
I have plasic, small dog dishes, and the birds pass on them for the easter baskets everytime.
I will try and post Picture.

Plus the holes make for better ventilation all the way around. I use the same type bowels from the "dollar general store" and I always add afew more holes around the entire bowel. I use straw pellets for the bedding material.
