Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody feeds pig pellets instead of pigeon pellets. The only reason I ask this is because pigeon pellets are so expensive where I live. What is a good protien level 15% 16%?
Thanks,
Caleb

Scott,

Do you feed the birds straight pellets or do you mix grain
with the pellets?

I like them cause I'm lazy and it takes less work LOL,just kidding, sort off, what I don't like about mix is that there's just to much picking and choosing, and certain grains just left, which in turn I end up dumping and refilling fresh, with pellets they either have food or they don't so the youngsters get the same thing every feeding, the draw back of (most) pellets is the salt content in them has the birds drinking more water which in turns means messy as far as droppings, notice I said most, this year I started using a brand called Nutrina, the droppings are solid like grain fed and (all) youngsters are all healty as they tend to be on pellets,I've tried everywhich way as far as feed and I allways fall back on pellets during breeding season, generally I feed in the morning and just leave it in all day,at night I remove so that mice don't contaminate it,all feed must be kept protected from Rodents !!!!!,as far as cost lay pellets are economical but I never consider cost when it come's to the birds,I will only buy the best that I can get my hands on,my pellets I buy close to home,my wheat and Milo I drive 40 mi one way to get,I don't like the pellets where I get my wheat and milo and I don't like the wheat and Milo where I get my pellets, just keep in mind that not all pellets are the same when it comes to qaulity and the same goes for grains,I buy all my grains seperate and do my own mixing.

Caleb I feed straight pellets, otherwise they end up throwing feed all over the place sorting through, with just pellets they dont sort through they just eat, search around for the right pellets also as there are some pellets that pigeons won't like, also I never buy any type of feed unless it's in the heavy paper as far as bagging due to it's much harder for Rodents to contaminate when stored at the mill or feed store, the weave bags will asorb Rodent urine, also check the feed that you buy before feeding,if it smells funny or tastes funny,Mouldy or what have you DON"T use it.

I know a few guys that have kings and other utility breeds. They say that they get good results feeding pig pellets. The young turn out nice and plump. It is much more economical than other types of pelllets.

I knew a guy who raised the big Show Racers, or maybe it was exhibiton homers. Hard say they were as big as a truck, Arnold Swartzenegger looking homers. And he fed them small dog food and that's it. These things were huge and had to have weighed a couple of pounds. Bad part was the high protein made the birds have these cancerous looking growths to their extremities.

Hey Scott, Thanks for the info about Nutrino. I'll see if I can get some of it for my next purchase. Is there a name to it like: "Nutrina Pigeon Pellets" or anything that I can call it when I shop for it? FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hello, check out the URL below. They have informtion on different kind of Purina Pellets for pigeons offered by Purina Mill.

http://www.qualityfeedco.com/pigeon.htm

It is surprising the Purina Mill website have no information on pigeons feed but they do offer pigeons feed

http://www.purinamills.com/main.html

Scott, Would you able to tell which one you use to feed breeders

Thanks, -Rauf

The pellets that I use are lay pellets, meaning that thier intent are for laying chickens, the brand name is Nutrena,it's called Naturewise layer complete pellets 16,
the 16 meaning protien percentage, you can get higher protien but I just don't see a need for it,pigeon pellets generally cost more and I doubt that there is much if any differance,my wheat and Milo are Purina,I find it fairly consistant as far as qaulity and it comes in the heavy paper bagging that I like,Chuck Nutrena is a mill in Stockton but it's strickly wholesale I believe, might want to check around I get it from my local feedstore and just kind of fell across it as I needed some feed right away,Nutrina does all grains but I havnt tried thier wheat and milo but I'll give it a shot,I like using what works and it seems whwn I start buying just here and there I end up with garbage.

Chuck I get no mess with these pellets,I thought that it would get messy come Summer with the added water intake but it never happened, the birds seem to really like them also.

II will check with my local feed store and see if they can get it here I like the idea of pellets as they have all the menerials and vitamens that young birds need and it dise make a defferance with them.
you said that they dident give then loose dropings that is a plus. Thanks for the info Scott.
Keep them up and flying Chuck Foster

I heard some pellets contains antibiotics specially pellets for chickens. Is that good for rollers? It may lower the resistance. The effect may not seen in offspring but if continue to use it will evenly appear. What you guys think
