If you had to start over with a new family who's would it be? How are they better than other families?

Thank you

As I am happy with the results I currently get, I think any limitations are more due to my ability or inability to work with what I already have. This could involve training, breeder selection, culling or having a clear vision or not as to what I want from my efforts.

However, to go along with your question, if I were going to start over, I would want to obtain 10 to 20 rollers from a trustworthy loft and fly them out. I would pick the best 1 or 2 cock birds and hens and breed from them, although, I would not hesitate to breed from some of the others if at least the first 3 or 4 primary traits are demonstrated.

1. Roll
2. Velocity
3. Depth
4. Control
5. Type

Other considerations are frequency of performance, expression, and kitting ability. More subtle traits are a steady emotional demeanor, calmness in the loft, intelligence in the look they seem to give you when you are in the loft or are handling them.

The first step in breeding better rollers is to make the proper investment and get the best you can afford. From there you can work on improving the 5 PT’s.

I don’t think that a family “name” has a lot to do with the results you will get, although I think there is some assurance and assumption that you are getting birds of quality when there is a “name” attached to the family.

Remember, a family name is only a “brand” representing “value” only in the mind of the purchaser.

I know this is probably not exactly how you wanted the question answered but I think it deserves being said as newcomers can be easily taken in by name brands without understanding what it is they should be looking for in quality rollers. FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hey JR
I would most likely start with birds from someone in the top performance end of the hobbie that way you have birds that are good performers know mater were you get your birds from they will not perform the same for you as they do for the person that they come from becouse you will not handle them the same as he or she dose.
you will feed different and fly them different you will also pair them your way and if you line breed the family will develop as too the way you develop it not as someone else would.
So as I see it just find the best performers that you can and get all the advice from the top flyers that you can and go to it.
Keep them flying Chuck

If had to start over I would go to the two sources from which my birds are built and get offspring or select birds from the kit that best respresent the birds I started with as stock birds. I am building a family using two families, therefore I would have to start over, but at least I wouldn't have to just fly someone else's birds outright.
Brian.
