i have 2 kinds of reds in my kits, and was wondering how they're described and what they're called. one hen has a light, horn colored bill, the other a darker bill. the lilght billed bird also has a more solid color red, whereas the dark billed has visible barring in the tail, and darker flights.

Steve, Ill do my best.

There are 3 basic colors for pigeons. Ash red, Blue and Brown. Every bird is one of these 3, it may be modified so as to make it difficult to tell which, however.

Ash red comes in all patterns (check, bar and barless) It also expresses itself in spread which is commonly called lavender. Ash is dominant to blue and brown.

Recessive red is epistatic, meaning it covers up whatever is underneath. It is recessive, it requires both parent to contribute a RR gene to be fully expressed. In other words a bird could be gentically blue, but if is has 2 doses of rec. red it will appear red. Rec. red doesnt show pattern. Rec red will sometimes show as bronzing if only 1 parent is RR. Bronzing is rec red and whatever the base color is together on the same feather. It is usually more concentrated along the shaft.

The way to tell between them is as you already identified. Ash in pattern will show a bar on the tail (or pattern on bird), rec. red will not. Rec red is usually a deeper more rich red than ash.

Well Steve I have to assume you aren't serious with that question. Every bird in my loft and I do mean every bird is carrying Recessive red. Not all show it but is runs very strong in my loft. Rec reds can roll with the best of them. Joe

steve its real simple you eather have ash red or recessive red. Ash red will have a grey tint on the wing, recessive red might show a blue tent on the rear. You could have a solid red pigeon which is still recessive red. If you put dilute to ash red you get creams. You put dilute to recessive red you get yellows.

picture is pretty good. Its to bad there is'nt a simple booklet for begginers. I have had rollers 22 years and i still get confused. James Turner has helped me the most to understand things. If you could find his old videos it is worth your time. expesially for begginers. After 22 years i still enjoy learning more.
