What do you guys use for nesting material and how much of it do you give to your birds?

I am using mix of hay and little pine tree twigs. Will get some pine needles down the road.

However some birds are building nests while others really arent. Any suggestions?? Should I add more?

They like heaver twigs too and straw i don't use hay because it grows weeds when it gets to the mulch pile.Pine twigs help with bugs also they do work good. Dennis

Pine needles are the best in my opinion.

I use a mixture of tobacco stems and pine needles. I've been told that bugs don't like the tobacco stems and it seems to work for me. Tobacco stems also don't seem to get moldy but stay nice a dry.

I put a small handfull of cedar bedding in their bowl then throw pine needles on the floor of the loft and just let them have at it. Some of the birds are elaborate nest builders and some seem like they could care less if they have anything in the bowl. As it warms up they will get a lot more active. Also some of the birds are theives and steal from each other.

I use Large Dog food Bowls then coffee filter then 1/2 full with play sand then put dry Pine needles in floor for birds to work with if they don't make I help a little- I think that the sand helps with incubation time mine hatch up to 2 days early. GOD BLESS!!! Gentle Johnnie "Angels of the Sky Loft"

I have a few that dont build a nest either. Those that build the nest seem to be the best parrents and defend their babies the best also.

I used some elmers wood glue and put in some dry grass from the lawn and let it harden shaped in a circle. That would help keep some materail in the nest bowl. Do you use nest bowls? I use them so I can disgard them after two rounds and put in a clean new nest.

You can get spawled leggs on the babies if they slip and slide in the nest. They will start putting their leggs sideways to keep in place and it turns them into culls, They cant walk and breed with leggs that go out sideways. I have never been able to tie the leggs together with any sucusess. Best to prevent the problem.

If you dont use nest bowls in the nest box, you could put in some sand or wood shavings to 1 1/2" thick and that might help. Bill C

Yes I use plastic nest bowls. Tony thats a good idea lol I forgot about that. What my friend does is use carpet foam cut to the right size as nest pads.
