hey guys.
i have a question.
if your neighbors mutt breaks your backyard fence,
comes into your yard while your at school,
kills all your chickens and birds,
and he claims that his dog didnt come into your yard,
despite that he is the only one with a dumb mutt in your neighborhood.
and his part of the fence is broken too.

i live in a neighborhood where the backyards are back to back.

is there any thing you can do to recover your losses?

Thats a huge bummer. I would call the cops. Or if you have home insurance have them look into it as well. If you didn't catch the dog in the act though I don't know how much can be done.

very sad. did the dog by any chance eat any of your birds? if so, the proof is in the poop.

Most states have laws that entitle you to compensation IF you can prove which dog was at fault. Definately report it, get it documented.

At my place, the cops say that if I didn't personally witness it or others have witness it, I have no case!

My experience with dogs killing birds is that the dog will bring some of the evidence back home, so if you can look in your neighbors yard you might see some bird remains. By the way if the dog is guilty, he will not stop... I know because I owned such a dog and it cost me some money.

Well maybe you can set up a decoy and video tape when it happens. And hopefully on that evidence you can extend it to the other situation. So I suppose document extensively.

fou, don't wait for it to happen again. at least let the dog's owner know how pissed you are, and if it happened again the outcome might be different.

If you talk to him,he will call the Humane society on your pigeons.
The best thing to do is set a trap so if he comes back, which most likely he will, you can catch him and take him to the pound, report it to the Humane society that this dog keeps going in your yard and sousing problems.
If you catch him again ,just take him for a ride far away.

Im not sure what a humane society will care about pigeons. I can see code enforcement perhaps maybe animal control. What has your experience been? ONly reason I ask is because I worked for one for a year.

How did the dog get to your birds? Were the chickens free ranging or in a pen? Sounds like you need to do a better job of varmint proofing your pens. As a kid I lost my first pair of homers to a cat. I was pissed
but as my Dad showed me, it was my fault because I built a crappy pen. Animals will be animals and owners are not always able to control them 100% of the time. Get caught making the dog disappear or hurting it in any way and you will lose everytime.
Good Luck!

i agree with katyroller, your loft or cage sould be build in suge a way that no preditor could enter it what so ever. If you are keeping something in a pen or locked up it is your responsibblity to secure its safety. and that means you sould not let any preditors get to your bird. Chickens I can understand but for sure you can lock your birds away from these kind of incidents..

This is only my feel about it and anyone may differ from me.

I have had the case were my own dogs killed more that 60 birds in one day and the very next day killed 40 more witch I bought and havent even payed for the dead birds.
so Changed some things around my loft and now its safe even for my baby birds.

Your coop/loft should be prepared for the worst. But if an animal comes into your yard you should be able to do something about it. Trail cameras are good. Set one by your loft so you have the evidence you need. If the dog is free calll animal control, if you are worried about neighbor retrubution, be annoynomous.
And fix your back fence.
