Hello all. My name is Ty Nottingham. I am a 22 year old fancier from Fort Collins Co. I have been breeding various breeds of pigeons since I was 14. But have always been facinated with the performing breeds. I have had my birmingham roller for about a month in half and must say, I've become a little obsessed. I have been reading many of the posts on the forum and have really enjoyed gleaning what can, but decided is was finally time to become a member. I only currently have 12 kit birds and two breeding pairs. We would be doing a little better but have recently had BOP issues so the kit birds wont be back out of the loft for a while.

To be perfectly honest I'm not sure. I purchased her recently because of her form and bright eye. She's just now putting together a nest so I'll let you know how the youngsters turn out. Kind of a crap shoot I know, but I'm pretty new to this and figured I'd take a chance with her.

She might as well be. I got her off of Eggbid.com The rest of my rollers where purchased from a local fancier though. As far as I was told most of my kit are Pensom. But then again thats like saying Janssen in the racing world. Its just a very broad spectrum I guess.

My most tame little almond. I think she believes I'm her mate. Its hard to get her off of me during feeding, and she's not starving, just coo's on my shoulder non stop.

yea, I've noticed. I presumed I would have BOP problems because of all the large trees around my loft. I didn't know it would get this bad. We'll keep dealing with it in stride. For the first month I flew the birds we didn't have a single lose, or even see a BOP. Now that the Coopers knows we are here he come by every day. I am also fortunate enough to be a falconer and will have the ability to trap and release birds of prey come this fall, I'm hoping to be able to trap and move the resident coopers. Of course another will fill the nitch but I think it may help for time.

hey Pogo, as a falconer, are you saying you can legally trap and release bop's?

As a licensed falconer yes, but I limited to species and a trapping season. This is also something that anyone with little or no experience should not try. Needless to say I'm sure you know how highly illegal it is for anyone without a license and experience to do so I won't go into that. Also, I am a General falconer with four years experience. This requires a two year apprenticeship prior and during that time species that can be trapped are limited to Red Tails and American Kestrels.

ok, but you did say you'd be able to trap and relocate the resident coopers in the fall. i'm only asking since it is obvious if a licensed falconer with the proper permits can do this, it would be a great thing rather than see people do it illegally. i'm not into breaking the law, but after reading what you said, it seemed to me you could be doing a service to others as well as yourself. understand?

Oh yeah I understand that. There are a few of us here in Co. that have been helping each other out. My mentor, like me, is a falconer as well. We have been able to relocate a few birds in past seasons for other faciers. Its not something thats looked at in the highest regard with falconers, but it seems to do no harm to the BOP and can save a fancier a lot of trouble. Also it may be something worth looking into in your area. You've probably got a falconer near you that might jump at the opertunity if you let them know your troubles. Our lofts can also be potentially hazardous to the hawks, as I have seen them get caught in chicken wire and bobbed traps. This can be another idea presented to the falconer that my be worth his while.

With all the hawks around soon all the song birds will be in dangered species. All these hawks will kill all backyard birds and instead of us feeding the pigeons in the park we will feed the bops.LOL

My floor plan for the loft is 4' by 8'. The loft is about 8' tall on the high side and about 7' on the shorter side. The eve runs 16" over the shorter wall and was then turned into 4 extra nest boxes that stick out from the wall adding a bit more space. If you take a look at the aviary the dimensions are the same and the nest boxes are as big as the joists are apart. I currently have 8 breeding pairs in there will some room to spare. I like the breeders to have as much room as possible, especially since most of mine (at least for now) are prisoners.

Ralph, I don't have any dimensions down on paper but I found some more photos that might give you a good idea of what the breeding loft is like.

I put four 7/8" holes at the end of each skid so that we could mount wheels on the loft if we need to move it.

I wish I could take credit for them. They were given to me by my mentor years ago. I believe he brought them back from Belgium. They were laying out to be thrown away and I asked him if I could take them home. I'm going to try my hand at building a few of my own this summer. I really like this particular style because of the size, there is a space between the dowels to slide a devider in to let the hen settle in with the cock without getting beat up. And there is also enough room to raise two clutches.
