I remove my babies from the nest just before the feathers are completely filled in under their wings. I leave them in a training loft for about a 1 week before putting them on the roof. I want to insure that they are eating right and keeping up their body weight. I basically give them grain similar to what I give my other kit birds, about a 11% mix. I give them plenty of feed the first few days then start to cut back a bit before I get ready to put them on the roof. I like to put an older bird in for a few days with them to show them where the water is etc... I don't like to wait too long to get them on the roof as my birds are very strong out of the nest and can get lost very easily. hope I answered your question.

I too take my birds out of the nest when the feathers under there wings are just growing in. I put them on the floor of the breeding loft. As soon as I see the young bird start eating a little on its own I put it in the young bird kit box. I leave them in the kit box for three-four days the whole time...even while the other birds are flying. I let them eat uninterupted while the other birds are flying. The young birds get to see the older birds trap while they are in the kit box. Then after the 3-4days I put them on the roof when the other birds are flying.I fly usually morning and evening 4 days straight then 2 days rest. They watch the other birds fly when they are on the roof. When I blow my whistle to bring the fliers down I catch the young birds and push them through the trap and give them food before the other birds land and trap. I do this for two days only. Then I let them trap themselves and eat with the other birds. I have only had a couple young ones out of the 25 birds not trap after the second day of pushing them through...If they do not trap after the second day and are hanging on the outside of the loft trying to figure out how to get in, it usually only takes one more time of putting them through the trap and they catch on. It is monkey see monkey do. I feed them milo, wheat and pellets in a mix that I mix myself. It is one part wheat, one part milo and a half part pellets. My Pellets are 24% protein. I feed them this mix the first five months. regulating there food a little here and there. They really seem to eat a little of everything. I do not have a weaning pen..so this is the way I have to do it. My older birds are in another kit box. The young ones take off on there own in about 10days after puting them in the kit box the first time. Usually the fist time they take off is when the kit is coming down they will take off and fly with them..then the next day they are with the kit. It seems to work for me..the are weanded, trap trained and learn there surrounding all in about 5-6 days out of the nest. Try what works for you. A lot of guys do it different...Just try some different ways and see what works for you.

My youngsters get all that they can eat,and this continues until right on up untill they are kiting and flying well, once they start trapping slow then and only then will I cut them back a bit until they trap quickly, they are like kids and are steadily mentally and physicly growing daily, you never want to hurt your babies !!,I give them about a 14 0/0 mix at about six mo. they will start getting straight wheat and mix maybe twice a week,I do this until they are about 8 mo. then I'll start playing with a weaker feed
