Hector.. I was talking about taking a bird that hasn't even been been weined yet .. honestly I see this on the cruel side.. the same as breeding roll downs in numbers.. this stuff puts us "all" in a bad light.

Hector (and Scott) just want to let you know that the red Higgins roller baby Gary bought at the LVRC auction on Saturday and took home to AZ is alive and well, eats and drinks on it's own. All is well, no harm done.

Good luck with it,if it dies for being too young, let me know and ill replace it.
But i pulled it at a good age it looked like it would be fine.
Im glad you like it,it should roll good,i bred the same pair last year and they produce some real nice birds.
This was my first round, and i told George i would donate something, and thats all i can do.

Hector...I knew you would have had it eating and drinking. What needs to be done is a direct line to Scott to let him have the last word before attempting anything that pertains to rollers for he has to have at least 80 years experience. He was Bill Pensom,s mentor you know. JDA

It's not too young at all and there's nothing cruel about it. No worries, that's a perfect age actually. They settle into a new home, trap train and learn the routine quickly. These little birds are actually pretty tough and smart. I put it and the other squeeker Gary bought on Saturday in the loft with my Helmets as they have 2 youngsters about the same age. They were instantly in the food tray and getting a drink of water. It's all good.

When Hector brought the bird he also put a dish of food and water in the show cage with it. I saw it drinking and eating. He took the extra steps to insure the bird was fine. Mr. Pensom writes in his book that you should pull squeakers as early as 18 days old. He states that many think this is too young but this is the best time to start them out on their own as they quickly learn how to fend for themselves. Hector is not a rookie who is doing something without knowing what he is doing. We would all like to give a bird more opportunity to be weaned but also know that a bird at around 26 plus days of age will be alright. Sometimes I think some people read thru these post just to look form something to pick apart and then it becomes a negative situation. Hector, we appreciate your support and the San Gabriel Valley Spinners support. You guys come to the show, bring birds to donate, participate and that makes the shows more fun. I hope to see you on March 7th at the Non-Stop show.
Thank you, Don M. Mac's Rollers

Scott - I have to respectfully disagree. The Arizona (All Breed) Pigeon Club has an annual "Baby" Lawn Show in early May in the Phoenix area. Many of the birds shown are "Fancy" breeds and no more than 5 to 8 weeks old. We haven't had any baby pigeons die yet. As long as the birds have food and water they are just fine in a carrier and in a show cage. We show these same birds again in October for our Young Bird Lawn Show and again in December for our Annual All Breed Winter Show. There is really no difference between a Loft Floor, Kit Box or Show Cage at that age.

Ralph .. did you pull it out of the nest and toss it in a box hoping that it would make it ?

If you do such at an age where you just "hope" it makes it then it is too young.. maybe I'm just too soft.

(its just out of the nest today so i hope he makes it )

Scott I don't do that period.but I know what you mean I read that the same way you did but then I knew that Hector been around birds long enough and that he knew what he was doing ..Hector must have had it eating already that he must have been talking about the ride distance in saying he hopes that the young one makes it.Don did say he saw it eating in the cage and a bird just out the nest wouldn't know how to eat unless you taught it to. so in a way I'm glad you said something it made other come out saying the bird is alright and eating right away.this way it clear everything up about being cruel and newbie reading it the wrong way ... peace..

Hi Scott. Pensom didn't say from the nest from the floor. He wrote "at the beginning the young birds are taken from their parents at the earliest time possible, at the age of 18 days old." Regardless, in an ideal situation we would give the youngster time to be weaned, etc. Hector has been raising birds for a long time as well as made the buyer aware of the age of the bird. Glad everything worked out as well. Thanks and enjoy your next fly! Scott, hope to see you at the NCRC show at the end of March.
