Truthfully find one of the best fliers near you and learn as much as you can from them and save your bucks for a year or two from now. It not going to matter what birds you get starting out it will take a few year for you to simply learn how to fly them properly.

Very good advise Brad. You will find that there are families out there that could meet your needs much better than these gentlemen you mentioned. The name doesn't make the birds. Their ability to fly and train birds is what has set them apart. Take your time and look around. You wont be disappointed. Dont listen to the breeders try to tell you how well you will do with their birds. Let the birds do the talking and you cant go wrong. Joe

Find some one close, that has birds that you like. See as many other fliers as you can. Then talk to the them about what it takes to fly thier birds. If you can do what they say get a few and get started. If he is close, advice is close, and that is worth a lot.
I have been told that you will breed your best. I believe that, especially since as you get started you do not fly the birds you acguire. So realilze that what you get will be replaced with what you breed.

Good luck.

rollinfever, Good luck. When I was thinking of getting back into rollers a couple years ago I could not get anyone on this site to invite me over to see their birds or learn anything. They (sometimes) will give you info on the site but unless you are in their group of friends I don't think they want you over.

Find yout local club, drive a little if you have to, and the club will open thier lofts and get you started right.
Remember no wants to throw away good birds, and until you show, that letting you have a few good ones is not a waste, why would anyone let you have the best. Sold or otherwise.
Again go to a couple local club flies, and the friends you make will help you out.

I never hinted or asked for free birds. I also did not expect the best birds, all I was hoping for was an honest breader that would not sell me junk. All I wanted to do is learn before I spent money. I know that you have to be carefull but a few questions and anyone would know that a 65yr old disabled vet probably wouldn't be jumping fences and fighting off dogs to get a couple of birds that may or may not be good. I did find a couple of clubs 20-30miles away and while talking to them (computer) they never said come over or even hinted that I might be welcome.

I am sorry you have had such a hard time. I guess I am a little different. When I found the club I did not wait for the invitation, I asked if I could meet up with the closest guy. Guil Rand invited me over and intoduced me to the rest of the Utah Roller guys, which have been very welcoming. Just ask. They will invite you over.

RT. Now I'm just guessing, I may be 100% off base and wrong, but (it may be a big but) maybe the guys in Utah are friendlier than in So. Calif. Just maybe! Anyway RT enough of this poor me stuff. I've got a few birds (good or bad) and I'm trying to learn so that I'm not an idiot.

Sorry if I came off wrong, I hope that the guys in So. Cali are just as friendly.
Good luck with your birds. I have been told that your best, will be the ones you breed. So as they say, cull hard, and you will have a good kit in a few years.

Rollenfever.. If you want to meet and ask questions regarding people in your area, Go to the LV show and meet them and see and maybe bring home some damn good birds.George Ruiz would be one person that would help you I,am sure. Its this weekend and you would meet the best in LV and LA. P.S.If not LV,Call Tony and order maybe three pair of his Ruby,s,And you can,t go wrong. JDA

I have found that the Ruby Rollers are very easy to work with. They are pretty consistant and breed well with other strains. Give Tony C. a call, he will be glad to help you out.

Dave...The best thing to do with ruby,s,Is keep them ruby,s.If it,s not broken why do you have to fix it? Don,t cross them for the sake of crossing them. They will do everything that you want them to do,That,s just up to you and your skills. He has taken most of the guess work out of it for you.JDA

I agree with you on the Ruby's, but I have seen them in action when mixed with Steve Agent and Richard Apodaca birds and they scored well in the Fall Fly. The kit consisted of pure Ruby's and 50/50 strain birds.

I had (died)a red spangle hen that went back to Cornell Norwood, H.Coderre and Richard Apodaca. I put a nice pure Ruby hen with the Red Spangle Cock bird (from same). I will get a few rounds out of that before I will have another hen for the cock. Richard thought it might be a good idea, why not try??? The spangles throw recessive reds.

Hey JDA, I do breed them. I have 2 nice pairs of Ruby's that are pure and will soon have more. Like I said I put a Ruby Hen on a Red Spangle because I lost a hen. The extra Ruby hen was the best I had to put him with at this time. I have a young hen for the Spangle but she needs to mature more before she will be ready to breed.
