I have a great set of birds flying now. One problem though i am not happy with their style. 18 months old will it improve ?? Give me some thought.

Hi Scott, Usually ones the birds start to drop 5' you know the style they are going to be. There is some that as soon as they are 2-3 months they are showing excellent style. So 18 months is already giving you the style that you are going to see in them.

What style are they giving you right now and which style are you looking for?

If you are looking for a particular style don't breed out of birds that don't show you what you are looking for.

This has to do with how the birds were select before breeding. There is a lot of things that we have to put a mind before we breed this birds. We still get birds that show bad style even if they are out of a pair that had excellent style just don't breed out of those bad style birds.

Scott - Quickspins advice is 100 percent correct and if you want (This is not a joke) I have some great recipes one my mom calls arroz con los pigeonnes. If they are not rolling correctly and are sloppy this is where they need to be.

Nick, what am I going to do the first time I see my birds roll, how do I judge what's good and what's bad. I know of one other person here in Connecticut with rollers. What I'm saying is I won't know what a cull is technically, they could roll 30 to 40 feet and I'll be completely amazed, but it could be all wrong. What's a Cull?

John not to worry you will be able to tell if your 30 footers are tight or sloppy, I can tell that's why I have all the fosters you need. Dennis

John i am very lucky to be surrounded by great mentors. When i got back into rollers i contacted a GREAT pigeon fancier. In my area named Myron Berger, he not only gave me a list of great people. He also provided me with enough literature for a PHD in pigeons. So with that said the way you know if it is the right stuff is education and people that are great like the ones here. If your happy with your birds keep doing what your doing.

Pigeon Casserole

Ingredients:
2 pigeons
1 oz (25 gm) butter
8 oz (225 gm) stewing steak
1 rasher of bacon
4 pint (300 ml) stock
2 oz (50 gm) mushrooms
salt, pepper
1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
1 tablespoon (15 ml) redcurrant jelly
Half ounce (12 gm) plain flour
A little water

Method..
Cut the pigeons in half and fry in butter until browned. Cut the steak into cubes and dice the bacon. Place all three meats in a 4 and a half pint oval casserole dish and cover with stock, mushrooms and seasoning. Cover and cook for 2 hours at gas mark 4, 350F (180c). Then mix together the lemon juice, redcurrant jelly, flour and a little water and stir into the casserole. Return to the oven and cook for a further 15 minutes.

Scott,

I wouldn't be in such a hurry to cull. Sloppy rollers are more fun than no rollers.
Look to upgrade your breeder loft. Use your existing breeders as foster. This will allow you to see what your "new" family will produce and also keep you from having regrets if your new birds are no better than what you started with.

Keith .. I have to disagree.. for me they are like running finger nails over a chaulk board .. I would honesty rather see youngsters in flight toying around over the backyard.
Now that is not to say that even birds that are capable can't look like dog crap depending on condition. because they most certainly can.. the same holds true for youngbirds just developing.

Its not the whole loft prodigy testing has identified the problem birds. I just thought maybe the young birds would grow out of it.
I just call it the handed twist, part of the hobby.
