I just finished reading a book that i recived from Jerry Allen "Pigeons For Pleasure And Profit" by Charles Foy And Clair Hetland. Found alot of good info. One this that struck me kind of strange way they talked about feeding peanuts to the pigeons. Anyone out there have any thoughts on this. As to what kind and and good or bad.

Greetings Steve..Bruce here..I have been waiting for someone to jump on this...I have raised/raced long distance racing homers for many years..raced with German clubs when living over there (the last time 10 years)..many fliers will put the peanut as many as the bird will eat at 400 miles and longer. The peanut is a candy to them as is safflower to pigeons. I have not tried peanuts on rollers because of size, however my rollers eat large dent corn..I will try the peanut. Something else I use constantly is garlic in the water and during the race season oil in the feed. I am doing this with the rollers this year. Fine ground garlic at 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water twice a week. This will really clean the respitory system..nose wattle gets chalk white indicating health. I will come back and tell you on the peanuts. I think it may give them too much punch and they will want to sky out..my Smiths want to do that anyhow. Later..Bruce

Raw Spanish peanuts is what you want to feed. You can get it as a crumble. The birds will have very high levels of energy and their plummage will be very soft and shiny. The downsides are that the peanuts are very high in fats which will cause very high energy levels. If you have a family that is strong on the wing or you don't fly regularly, you may have issues. Another problem is that the peanuts can be hard to find and are expensive when you find them. I used to work for a produce company and we would sell the peanuts as 50# cases. I don't remember what a case went for but I do remember that the local race club would have several members split the case and the cost.

So if I am hearing you right Tracey If I have a family that is stroung already and are over flying this would not be a good idea. I have 12 now that I am starting to train now. I have tried to at release them everyday and have been for the past 1 1/2 weeks. I started with 17 and now have 12 I did see an BOP get one. And I recived a call lastnight for one that was found and captured 20 miles form my place. I have been feeding them 16%. I was thinking of starting this weekend on taking them out a few miles and seeing now this works. Any Ideas?

Yeah,if your birds are overflying I would expect peanuts would make your problem worse. Alot also depends on how often you are feeding the peanuts.
My Dad did not feed the peanuts as part of the daily diet but as an energy booster during the training season or before a long tough race.

I use peanuts during the molt sparingly because of the fat, but they will sure slick em up!
I haven't had any trouble with the size, Spanish or Georgia Giants but I feed them as splits not whole nut. I have used Peanut oil as an additive on milo and wheat to boost them some.

SD,
I never tried the peanut oil but it sounds like it would work great. I will give it a try the next time I add some brewers yeast powder to the feed. What effects have you experienced with your Rollers?

I am going to run them out this weekend a few miles and see how it goes.I am enjoying the feed back on this it's noce to know there are fokes out there that have answers instead trying to someones dandreff up.

Like Bruce stated, I use to racxe homers too. The "peanuts" were used as a "treat". Since I have gotten into rollers I have never given them any type of "peanuts". Raising rollers is a "completely" different ball game..

What does the brewers yeast do for your birds and how much do you give them?

This thread is about "peanuts" not "brewers yeast". It might be wise to start another thread.

Hey Bruce,In the 60s i used to buy "peanut hearts"its the little piece like the navel between the two long halves,if you open the two halves sometimes it falls out, these little hearts were too bitter for some foods and removed...the feed store would have a 100lb sack of them and was sold as bird seed,,thus I HAD TO TRY EM....LEO
