A pigeon can only use protein up to 17%. So, if you are thinking that feed with 20% protein is better for your birds than 17% you are wrong. Protein is not cheap.

Hello Nick,

Would you please direct me to where you found this information regarding the protein metabolism of pigeons, I am very interested in this statistic you just mentioned.

Thank you for your assistance,

I thought this might be interesting disagreement with Nicks post, what do you think?:

Now, some general points about nutrition, plus some odds and ends:

We are told that breeding pigeons can do well on a diet containing 13-15% protein. One group of investigators found that when pigeons were offered cereals and peas free choice, the mixture chosen by the birds corresponded to a protein intake of 12.5-13%. However, these investigators also found that a ration containing 18% protein, obtained by adding soybeans or fish meal to the diet -- which add high quality protein -- resulted in optimum hatchability, growth and development of youngsters. They also found that levels of protein higher than 18% did not result in further improvement in growth and weight gains of youngsters. These findings indicated that a ration containing upwards of 18% protein, but not higher, should be ideal for breeding and rearing.

Pete,

Indigestable carbohydrate is fiber, not indigestable protein.

Dave, yes of course you are right, that was a mistake. The fibre in any high (or low for that matter)protein feed is made of carbohydrate.
I was cautioning about oversimplification and did it myself, lol
I find this stuff confusing yet fascinatiing.
Hows this for simplification --
Carbs are carbon hydrogen and oxgen.
fat is the same but with less oxygen.
Protein is the same with added nitrogen and a few other bits :)
Water is oxygen and hydrogen.
My brother and his wife used to advise me to use fresh water in the kettle every time, because as they put it, you will "boil all the oxygen out of it".
I used to laugh and say "well we don't want to end up with a kettle full of hygrogen do we?",lol
Pete,

This is my full note on this: The bird starts to receive a diminishing return on protein at about 14% and by 17% have reached the maximum threshold and what is fed beyond that level is excreted as waste.

I am suggesting that if you are paying money for 20% and higher for protein you might be wasting your money. It can also be said that to go over 17% is not necessarily harmful to the bird.

I have not figured out who my source was yet, but I am going through most of my notes finding names and checking.

Nick, I am not positive about the birds; but am pretty sure a "Left leaning communist pinko @#%*; A Masturbator" would need a 20% protein and 18% fat diet to continue successfully..LOL
