While active duty military at Ft. Bragg N.C. 1966-1979, every time (and that was a lot) I came back home from overseas, George Patterson always had a box of birds for me to put in the trunk of my car...absolutely no scrubs, but foundation birds.

My first good rollers came as I went around for the World Cup regionals in 08. I had expressed interest in some rollers that spring and had been invited by Guil Rand to go around. Guil had a couple other person that were interested also, so to have every one comfortable I jumped in with Mont Bone.
By the time we had arrived at Mont's House he knew that I was still looking for my start. While his birds where flying he showed me some of his young birds. At this time he came acroos two birds that had decided to mate up, and had pulled them from the "A" team. He then asked if I had a box, I informed him that I could get one. Tom Monson had some in his vehicle. I went and got a Box and Mont gave me the pair.
A Short time later a got some KGB birds. Brian Middaugh had bred these birds and so I was in contact with him. Brian decided by the end of the breeding season to help improve what I had originally gotten. He sent me a pair to breed from and a few young birds. This just cost a box and shipping.
And this spring, I went of the house of Bob Adams. I went to pick up my bands, for 09. As I arrived he had two birds in a side cage that he showed me. He told me they were good birds. He then placed them in a box and handed them to me with my bands. I have some nice young birds from this pair. The "357" magnum hen is awsome.
Cliff Ball also sent me a Starley Hen to help me along. Again no cost, except for the shipping. Along with the hen Cliff included a few young birds that were her offspring. One Cock bird turned out really good, and is know a breeder for my son.
And finaly Jon Farr, bred an extra round this summer and gave me close to 20 young birds to fly out. I am really excited to see how some of these work out, I got young birds off his best pairs.
I can say that my best birds were free,,, except shipping. If you are serious and show it, friends in the hobby will help you get a good start.
I want Bob Adams, Brian Middaugh, Mong Bone, Cliff Ball, and Jon Farr to know that I really appreciate thier help. I hope that I am able to compete at a high level in a few years, and make them proud of the birds they entrusted to me. I also hope to be able to help someone who is getting started, just like they helped me.

There are two fanciers on this site that have helped me out with birds. The birds from one fancier did not work for my management style so they went to a friend (free just I like got them) who enjoys having birds and watching them fly. He still has them and is very happy with them. The other fancier recently helped me out with a couple birds that are maturing very nicely. This guy could have gotten a pretty penny for them even though they aren't air proven.
There are still fanciers out there that are stand up folks and always willing to help. They may not always offer free birds but you can bet the advice will be free! The key point to remember is that we have to pass on the knowledge and help others whenever possible.
Tracey
P.S.- I didn't include their names because I haven't talked to them and I don't want them being bombarded by folks looking for free birds.

I would put Tom Monson right up there with the top class acts in the hobby. Very helpful, generous and a great mentor. I would say that David Curneal is another class act as well. In Arizona, I would have to give credit to Gary Richards, a true birdman.

When I got back into rollers 28 yrs ago, I was fortunate to have Paul Vaughn, Delbert Blair, Ron Harrison and Larry Hupp to provide me with quality stock birds, sound advise and mentorship. I never had to buy a bird from any of those great friends and have vowed never to sell a bird. I cull hard, keep what I need and give the rest away to newcomers and others as a way to repay the favors I was given by those 4 gentlemen!!

Mr.Bill Roy sent me two pairs of nice birds, the two cock being birds that he was considering stocking himself. He sent them to me free of charge I payed only the shipping. He wanted to help me out, and these birds have really moved me forward. He def. helped me out! He is a great pigeon flier and a all around good guy, we keep in touch, and he always ask how the birds did after a fly. He has even mananged to coach me some on how to feed these rascals haha. I'd say he's is pretty generous, I think it's people like him and others that have been mentioned that makes this hobby so great.

The man that has truly helped me and many others is Paul Fullerton. From giving advice and his time on feeding to breeding, opening up his home and flying his birds showing you what to look for, to providing birds to take home. He has been a great, generous mentor. Thanks Paul! Steve Bills
